Spontaneous combustion in nanobubbles inspires compact ultrasonic loudspeaker

ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2011) ? Nanometre-sized bubbles containing the gases hydrogen and oxygen can apparently combust spontaneously, although nothing happens in larger bubbles. For the first time, researchers at the University of Twente's MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology have demonstrated this spontaneous combustion in a publication in Physical Review E. They intend to use the phenomenon to construct a compact ultrasonic loudspeaker.

The fact that a violent reaction takes place is already evident from the damage incurred by the electrodes with which the reaction is initiated. These electrodes are used to make hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis, in the usual manner, in an ultra-small reaction chamber. If the plus and minus poles are continually alternated, tiny bubbles containing both gases arise.

The frequency with which the poles are alternated determines the size of the bubbles: the higher the frequency, the smaller the bubbles. Combustion only takes place in bubbles that are smaller than 150 nanometres (a nanometre is a millionth of a millimetre); nothing happens in larger bubbles. Early experiments in microreactors also showed that nothing happened in larger bubbles; the heat can dissipate to the larger internal surface.

Metres per second

Researcher Vitaly Svetovoy was working on the construction of an actuator for rapidly building pressure when he came across this phenomenon. Such actuators are, for example, used in loudspeakers for ultrasonic frequencies undetectable by the human ear in the medical world. None of the mechanical techniques currently available are suitable for making a very compact loudspeaker of this kind and still achieving a 'deflection' of metres per second on this scale. Svetovoy thought, however, that it might be possible by building up pressure with bubbles. The problem was that the bubbles could be made very rapidly but that they did not disappear quickly enough. The combustion reaction that has now been demonstrated might solve this problem. But it causes other problems too, such as the damage to the electrodes. "That is what we now have to look at," Svetovoy said.

Lake tops, Bono flops on 2nd week of `Dancing' (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Ricki Lake celebrated her top-scoring 23 points and 12 inches of weight loss; Nancy Grace celebrated some quick thinking in the control room; and Chaz Bono celebrated just getting through his routine on "Dancing With the Stars."

"My knees just hurt so much," Bono said before landing in last place Monday night. The author and activist is counting on viewer votes to carry him through Tuesday's episode, when a second celebrity will be eliminated from the hit ABC show.

Judges' scores are combined with viewer votes to determine who is ousted each week. Basketball star Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace, was the first contestant to go.

Judges said Monday that Bono's quickstep was just too slow and gave him 17 points out of 30.

"The bottom line is it's a quickstep and I've moved faster through the car wash," judge Len Goodman said.

Grace was perhaps moving a little too fast. She suffered a wardrobe malfunction during a bouncy number danced to "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing"). Grace had a little too much swing in partner Tristan MacManus' arms and her breast spilled out of her dress.

Viewers saw little if nothing of the mishap, however, thanks to a quick cut-away to the studio audience. After the number, host Tom Bergeron consoled the flustered Grace.

"On the European version," he said with a laugh, "that would be perfectly fine."

The 42-year-old Bono blamed his aching knees for forcing him to "(take) out some of the flashier stuff that was just really hurting my body," but said he'll push himself to the limit to stay on the show.

Lake's flashy moves during the jive earned her and partner Derek Hough the highest score of the night, and she's as happy about that as she is about her shrinking body. Lake, who said last week that she was inspired by former contestant Kirstie Alley's "Dancing" weight loss, has dropped four inches from her hips, four from her waist and another four from the rest of her after three weeks of rehearsals.

"I'm really getting in great shape," she said after the show. "I'll be wearing less and less clothing. The smaller I get, the less will be covered."

Rob Kardashian revealed his own weight woes before collecting 21 points for what judges called a "confident" jive.

"It's official. Rob Kardashian is a better dancer than (sister) Kim Kardashian!" judge Carrie Ann Inaba said Monday. (Kim lasted just three weeks when she was part of the show's 2008 cast.)

"You have the dancing gene," Inaba said.

Kardashian's 21 points were good for third place, where he tied with Grace, singer Chynna Phillips and Italian actress (and Clooney ex) Elisabetta Canalis.

Actor J.R. Martinez and reality star Kristin Cavallari both finished second with 22 points.

Joining Bono near the bottom of the scoreboard were actor David Arquette and TV personality Carson Kressley, who each earned 18 points.

Arquette said before his performance that he wanted to "blow people's minds," but the judges slammed his routine.

"Any connection that had with the jive was a coincidence," Goodman said. "The technique wasn't there."

Kressley turned in hours of extra rehearsal time, but his quickstep was still "a little wobbly," Inaba said.

Soccer pro Hope Solo scored 19 points for a jive that earned a mixed response from the judges.

The new "Dancing" set, however, which made its debut last week, is winning unanimous raves from the cast of pros. The revamped ballroom features a three-tier balcony, cocktail-table seating and a grand staircase that splits to reveal the orchestra.

"It's so epic. It's an honor to dance on it," said Mark Ballas, Cavallari's professional partner. "It's got a cool energy. You step out into it. It feels like a Roman coliseum."

World stocks stall amid wait for Europe debt plan (AP)

BANGKOK ? World stocks stalled Wednesday amid waning hopes that European leaders would quickly agree on a plan to contain a debt crisis that threatens to derail global economic growth.

Benchmark oil hovered above $83 per barrel while the dollar gained against the euro but fell against the yen.

In early European trading, Britain's FTSE 100 index fell 0.6 percent to 5,262.11. Germany's DAX dropped 1 percent to 5,572.36 and France's CAC-40 was 0.8 percent lower at 3,000.72.

Wall Street also braced for a lower opening, with Dow Jones industrial futures down less than 0.1 percent at 11,110 and S&P 500 futures slipping 0.2 percent to 1,167.60.

Shares in Asia lost steam after spending the morning in positive territory.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index eked out a gain of less than 0.1 percent to close up just 5.70 points at 8,615.65. The most sought-after shares included blue chips such as Nissan Motor Corp., which shot up 4.2 percent and Mazda Motor Corp., which was 3.4 percent higher. Panasonic Corp. gained 3.8 percent.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was 0.9 percent higher at 4,039.50. Benchmarks in Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines also gained. But South Korea's Kospi gave up earlier gains and closed down 0.7 percent to 1,723.09. Hong Kong's Hang Seng sank 0.7 percent to 18,011.06 while benchmarks in Singapore and Thailand also fell.

Worries about Europe have weighed on stock markets for months, and any glimmer of positive action tends to spark buying.

"Whenever there is a bit of a sense that there will be some credible action, in Europe in particular, then investors are pretty trigger happy on not wanting to miss out," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

"At the end of the day, I think everybody is very conscious of the fact that things are far from certain."

Others cautioned that if a concrete rescue plan for debt laden Greece does not emerge soon, then stocks could head right back down.

"Every time the market gets its hopes up that a solution to the eurozone crisis is near the rug gets pulled from under it," Ben Potter, market strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said in a research note.

"Only when we see firm action being taken, rather than hollow promises will confidence and sentiment begin to improve."

Energy and mining stocks rose as fears dissipated of a financial blowup in Europe, which could drag down economic growth across the globe and reduce demand for raw materials such as crude oil and metals.

Japanese energy explorer Inpex Corp. rose 1.1 percent and Hong Kong-listed shares of PetroChina, the country's biggest oil and gas company, gained 2.1 percent. Newcrest Mining Ltd., Australia's largest gold miner, jumped 2 percent.

A default by Greece could ripple across the globe, threatening the solvency of European banks and other financial institutions that have large holdings of the country's bonds. A default could also hurt U.S. companies which send about 20 percent of their exports to Europe.

Investment sentiment was boosted late Tuesday, when Greek lawmakers passed a controversial property tax ? one of a host of painful debt-reduction measures it must undertake in exchange for rescue loans. The country will go bankrupt unless it receives an euro8 billion ($11 billion) rescue loan before mid-October.

Another encouraging sign of Europe's commitment to Athens came from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who said her country would do whatever it could to help the debt-riddled Greece.

Those signals helped boost Wall Street stocks Tuesday. The Dow rose 1.3 percent to close at 11,190.69. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.1 percent to 1,175.38. The Nasdaq composite rose 1.2 percent to 2,546.83.

In currency trading, the dollar fell to 76.44 yen from 76.75 yen late Tuesday in New York. The euro fell to $1.3602 from $1.3641.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was down 78 cents to $83.67 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $4.21 to close at $84.45 per barrel on Tuesday on the Nymex.

Gunmen kill 5 relatives of Sunni fighter in Iraq (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Gunmen wearing military-style uniforms broke into the house of a pro-government Sunni militiaman early on Wednesday and killed five members of his family, including three children, Iraqi officials said.

A police official said the gunmen shot the women and children as they were sleeping in their home in Abu Ghraib, a Sunni-dominated area that used to be a haven for al-Qaida in Iraq.

Seven other family members were wounded in the attack. The militiaman, Hameed al-Zobaie, was not in the house at the time of the attack, the police official said.

A medical official in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Police said the gunmen likely were targeting al-Zobaie, who is a member of the Iraqi Sahwa, or Awakening Councils. The group joined forces with U.S. troops at the height of the Iraq war to fight al-Qaida. Ever since then, it has been a target for Sunni insurgents who call its members traitors.

Insurgents have stepped up attacks in Iraq recently as the U.S. military prepares to withdraw from the country by the end of the year.

In an earlier attack, a car bomb exploded near a popular restaurant in a Shiite neighborhood in southwestern Baghdad late on Tuesday night, killing three people and wounding 10 others, police said Wednesday.

How graphene's electrical properties can be tuned

Monday, September 26, 2011

An accidental discovery in a physicist's laboratory at the University of California, Riverside provides a unique route for tuning the electrical properties of graphene, nature's thinnest elastic material. This route holds great promise for replacing silicon with graphene in the microchip industry.

The researchers found that stacking up three layers of graphene, like pancakes, significantly modifies the material's electrical properties. When they fabricated trilayer graphene in the lab and measured its conductance, they found, to their surprise, that depending on how the layers were stacked some of the trilayer graphene devices were conducting while others were insulating.

"What we stumbled upon is a simple and convenient 'knob' for tuning graphene sheets' electrical properties," said Jeanie Lau, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, whose lab made the serendipitous finding.

Study results appeared online Sept. 25 in Nature Physics.

Graphene is a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in hexagonal rings. Bearing excellent material properties, such as high current-carrying capacity and thermal conductivity, this "wonder material" is ideally suited for creating components for semiconductor circuits and computers.

Because of the planar and chicken wire-like structure of graphene, its sheets lend themselves well to stacking in what is called 'Bernal stacking,' the stacking fashion of graphene sheets.

In a Bernal-stacked bilayer, one corner of the hexagons of the second sheet is located above the center of the hexagons of the bottom sheet. In Bernal-stacked trilayer (ABA), the top (third) sheet is exactly on top of the lowest sheet. In rhombohedral-stacked (ABC) trilayer, the top sheet is shifted by the distance of an atom, so that the top (third) sheet and the lowest sheet form a Bernal stacking as well.

"The most stable form of trilayer graphene is ABA, which behaves like a metal," Lau explained. "Amazingly, if we simply shift the entire topmost layer by the distance of a single atom, the trilayer ? now with ABC or rhombohedral stacking ? becomes insulating. Why this happens is not clear as yet. It could be induced by electronic interactions. We eagerly await an explanation from theorists!"

Her lab used Raman spectroscopy to examine the graphene devices' stacking orders. Next the lab plans to investigate the nature of the insulating state in ABC-stacked graphene. In this kind of stacked graphene, they also plan to study the band gap ? a range in energy, critical for digital applications, in which no electrons can exist.

"The presence of the gap in ABC-stacked graphene that arises, we believe, from enhanced electronic interactions is interesting since it is not expected from theoretical calculations," Lau said. "Understanding this gap is particularly important for the major challenge of band gap engineering in graphene electronics."

Besides graphene, Lau studies nanowires and carbon nanotubes. Her research has helped physicists gain fundamental understanding of how atoms and electrons behave when they are ruled by quantum mechanics. Her lab studies novel electrical properties that arise from the quantum confinement of atoms and charges to nanoscale systems. Her research team has shown that graphene can act as an atomic-scale billiard table, with electric charges acting as billiard balls.

Her other research interests include superconductivity, thermal management and electronic transport in nanostructures, and engineering new classes of nanoscale devices.

An educational component of Lau's research effort is the active involvement of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, especially minority and women, in her cutting-edge research, taking advantage of the ethnic diversity of UCR's student population and local communities. She is a founding faculty member of the UCR Undergraduate Research Journal. She also organized a "Women in Physics" lunch group that provides a friendly platform for female students, postdocs and faculty members to interact.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1994, Lau proceeded to Harvard University from where she received her master's and doctoral degrees in physics in 1997 and 2001, respectively. She joined UCR in 2004, after an appointment as a research associate in the Hewlett-Packard Laboratory.

Lau's awards and honors include a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, 2009; a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, 2008; the Richter Fellowship for Undergraduate Research, 1992; a David W. Grainger Senior Scholarship, 1993; and a Robert T. Poe Faculty Development Grant from the Chinese-American Faculty Association of Southern California, 2007. She has published more than 60 research articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Lau, a member of UCR's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, was joined in the research by W. Bao (the first author of the research paper), L. Jing, J. Velasco Jr., Y. Lee, G. Liu, D. Tran and M. Bockrath at UCR; B. Stanley at Caltech; M. Aykol and S. B. Cronin at the University of Southern California; D. Smirnov at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Fla.; M. Koshino at Tohoku University, Japan; and E. McCann at Lancaster University, United Kingdom.

Generate the Perfect Resume cover letter -- An Unofficial Guide

???

Are you in the process of finding and applying for jobs? If you are, you may be ready to mail out your resume. Before you send out your resume or resumes, you will want to take a close look at the cover letter of your resume. For starters, are you even using a cover letter?

If you are currently not using a cover letter, you will want to refrain from mailing out your resume, at least right away. Many businesses expect to receive cover letters attached to all resumes. In fact, many now require them, especially with mailed in applications or resumes. If you are unsure as to how you can go about creating the perfect resume or at least one that can benefit you, you will want to continue reading on.

When it comes to creating the perfect cover letter, there are a number of important factors to take into consideration. One of those factors is the job that you are applying for and the wishes of that company. It is common for some employers to list exactly what they want cover letters to include. If you are given a sample or directions, you are advised to follow them. Not following instructions can result in your resume, as well as your cover letter ending up in the "don't call," pile.

As previously stated, a company may have their own preferences as to what they would like cover letters to include. This is because no two companies are truly the same. That is why it is advised that you do not use the same cover letter for each resume that you send out. Instead, you will want to create and distribute different cover letters for each employer that you have. You can have a sample cover letter or a template to use, but it is advised that you take the time to personalize each cover letter in one way or another.

Speaking of personalizing your cover letter, you will want to personalize each cover letter that you send out to the jobs that you are applying for and the companies in which you are sending your resume to. For instance, if you are applying for the position of a legal secretary, you will want to plainly state that position. This will automatically set you apart from a good percentage of your competition. Customizing each of your cover letters to the particular job that you are applying for is a great way to get yourself noticed, as you took a few extra steps not necessarily required.

Another one of the many ways that you can create the perfect cover letter for yourself is by being short and to the point. With that in mind, you will not want to be too short either. A cover letter should be at least three paragraphs and you should try and keep all cover letters under one page long. It is advised that you do not use any colored fonts, as black ink should do. It is also advised that you do not use any colored paper for your resume cover letter. Some job seekers mistakenly believe that this catches the eye of those in charge of scheduling job interviews. Yes, it may, but not always in the ways that you had hoped for.

As for what you should include in your cover letter, it is advised that you list a few of your skills and qualifications. It is also important to keep this portion of your cover letter short and to the point. Your resume will go into further detail, but it is still advised that you quickly outline the qualifications and skills that you have. Be sure to focus on those that apply directly to the job that you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for the position of a legal secretary, you will want to summarize your computer software knowledge, typing skills, transcription skills, and so forth.

The above mentioned points are all points that you will want to take into consideration, when making a cover letter for yourself. In all honesty, any cover letter is better than no cover letter at all, but with cover letters being relatively easy to create, why take the chance.

Jawbone Jambox: Bluetooth Wireless Lautsprecher f?r iPhone & iPad

Tend to be Student Loans Much better than Credit Cards? | A Place ...

Whenever applying for student education loans, itA533;s so important with regard to prospective university students to determine their financial situation as best they are able to to receive the right funding. From tuition as well as books in order to room as well as board, bills and food, students should make sure to secure the funds they actually will have to get them through each semester at college.

By applying for the correct amount, students wonA533;t find themselves in the bind or even get on their own into a charge card nightmare.

Way too many college students nowadays get into big trouble with credit cards. ItA533;s unfortunate which students as well inexperienced to understand better receive enticing charge card offers in the mail. Usually when a charge card offer looms on the student, itA533;s like dangling the carrot in front of the rabbit. A student grabs the charge card offer with out thinking forward. Credit cards oftentimes appear to be a magic pill or a type of A533;free money,A533; and they then become the remedy students think they require.

Student Loans versus Credit Cards

Contrary, itA533;s the opposite. Like student loans, credit debt must be repaid. ThereA533;s a huge difference though. Student loans usually are removed with fixed interest rates, depending on the type of loan and a studentsA533; credit rating, amount of loan, repayment conditions, etc.

Nevertheless, thereA533;s usually a capture when students receive individuals A533;amazingA533; credit card offers. The catch is actually sky-high finance costs, some up to 22 %! However, oftentimes students donA533;t take into account the finance costs when they accept the credit card offers. ItA533;s kind of like, A533;IA533;ll consider that later on.A533;

Some students who havenA533;t removed enough student education loans to cover their own college costs resort to credit cards to pay for necessities, books as well as rent! TheyA533;ll make use of their credit cards to take out payday loans, which usually have even greater finance costs than by merely charging.

Never-ending Cycle of Debt

There are students who accept several credit card provide. After striking the limit on a single credit card, itA533;s easy to accept an additional and then an additional, and so on. With the high interest rates as well as finance costs attached to these types of credit card offers, students easily can ? rake ? up more than they discount for. Whenever students repay credit cards through only having to pay minimum monthly obligations, they are producing their finances worse. Finance charges accumulate month after month. It could take almost a lifetime to pay off the charge card bills.

Environmental Economics: It's Friday, so this must be a sports ...

Nascar economist Pete Groothuis and I are guest team teaching a sports and society course today (and to show our dedication to our profession we're missing the noontime basketball game). We're covering the economics of sports subsidies. We tell the familiar (at least to sports economists) story that sports stadiums and arenas (and the teams that play there) have little to no economic impact. They do generate public goods but these are most often less than the subsidies provided by city governments.

Here is the presentation (PPT). Thanks to Bruce Johnson for providing most of the slides. Note: we deleted the map of the Commonwealth of Kentucky with PRP inexplicably highlighted.

Snoring Sleep Disorder: Health Risks, Causes and Treatments ...

Snoring is frustrating and harmful to both partners - Photo by: Evil Erin with permission
Snoring is frustrating and harmful to both partners - Photo by: Evil Erin with permission

Almost 90 million American adults suffer from snoring disorders. Snoring can be caused by many reasons and can pose health risks if not treated.

According to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), almost 90 million American adults suffer from some type of snoring disorder. Of those adults, 37 million suffer from snoring conditions on a regular basis. Although snoring most often affects overweight men, it can affect both sexes regardless of weight. Understanding causes of snoring and seeking treatment can help minimize health risks associated with the condition.

Causes of Snoring

During sleep, throat muscle relax and your tongue moves to the back of the throat. When you breathe in and out, a vibration results. The loudness of the vibration varies, though Andrew J.M Prichard of the Royal Shewsbury Hospital reports snoring noise can be as loud as 110 dB, the equivalent to a jet plane approaching.

The following conditions can increase your chances of snoring:

  • Mouth anatomy: If your palate is low, thick and soft, or if you have enlarged tonsils or adenoids, the airway can narrow and result in snoring. If your uvula is elongated (the piece of tissue handing down from the soft palate), it can also increase vibrations.
  • Overweight: Being overweight can put extra weight on the throat and narrow airways.
  • Alcohol consumption: Alcohol relaxes the throat muscles and may contribute to snoring disorders.
  • Nasal problems: Congestion in the nose or deviated nasal septum restricts proper airflow and contributes to snoring
  • Sleep apnea: A very serious medical condition, sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that cuts off oxygen to the brain. Characterized by loud snoring and then periods of silence when breathing slows or even stops, sleep apnea is considered a serious medical condition.

Health Risks and Complication of Snoring

Snoring is not just a nighttime frustration, it can have adverse health effects for both partners as well. According to the Mayo Clinic, habitual snoring may result in:

  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Relationship problems
  • Lack of concentration and alertness
  • Higher risk of high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke
  • Increase in behavior problems, such as ADHD, for children who have sleep apnea

Habitual snorers and their partners are at risk for more motor vehicle accidents due to lack of sleep. Work efficiency and accuracy may also suffer and if the individual works around heavy equipment or any profession where concentration is essential, their lack of sleep may pose safety risks to themselves and others.

Treatments for Snoring

The first steps to treating snoring conditions are to make lifestyle changes. Losing weight, avoiding alcohol and modifying sleep positions are the easiest first steps to make. If those changes do not cure the snoring problem, other treatments may include:

  • Oral appliances: These appliances are specially fitted to keep your airways open while you sleep. The appliance will need to be checked every six months at least, to ensure it fits properly and that the condition is not worsening. Side effects from these devices are excessive salivation, sore jaws, dry mouth and facial discomfort.
  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP): This treatment option involves use of a pressurized mask that you wear over your nose while you sleep. It forces air through your airways and keeps them open at night. This device is the preferred way to treat sleep apnea. Side effects from this treatment option are dry nasal passages and troubles adjusting to the noise of the pump.
  • Surgery: There are a variety of surgery options (palatal implants, traditional tightening, laser surgery, radiofrequency tissue ablation), that you can discuss with your doctor.

Natural Treatments and Remedies for Snoring

There are many natural remedies you can try at home to stop snoring. Losing weight, avoiding alcohol and sedatives and sleeping on your side are some lifestyle changes to try. You can also try the following:

  • Nasal strips: Adhesive strips fit to the outside of the nose and help to keep the nasal passage open.
  • Nasal congestion: Treat nasal congestion to keep airways open. If using a nasal spray, do not use for more than 3 days in a row unless prescribed by a doctor. Chronic congestion may require surgery.
  • Muscle Exercises: There are some mouth and jaw exercises you can practice to tighten up the jaw and throat muscles. Look online for some methods or speak with your doctor. The Mayo Clinic reports that playing a Digeridoo seems to have helped strengthened upper airway muscles, but further research is required on this theory. Singing is another activity that strengthens muscles.
  • Essential Oils: More studies are required in this area, but a preliminary study in 2004, by Andrew J.N. Prichard, indicates that essential oils were able to reduce snoring occurrences when used in combination with one another.

ETA prisoners join call for lasting Basque ceasefire (Reuters)

MADRID (Reuters) ? Prisoners belonging to ETA have joined a call for a permanent ceasefire by the Basque separatist group, the newspaper traditionally used by the guerrillas said on Friday, raising hopes that an end to four decades of violence was a step closer.

The official Basque prisoners' collective EPPK, which includes some 700 prisoners in Spain and France, had been debating for 10 months whether to adhere to the 2010 Guernica agreement which demands that ETA lay down its arms, the newspaper Gara said.

ETA, which has killed more than 850 people in its half-century of armed struggle for an independent state in northern Spain and southwest France, declared a permanent ceasefire last year, but the Spanish government rejected it as insufficient because it did not come with full disarmament.

The organization has been weakened by a string of arrests and seizures of arms caches in Spain, France and Portugal, yet a political group linked to ETA won unprecedented control of city halls in Spain's Basque Country in recent local elections.

Canon enables AirPrint on a trio of PIXMA wireless printers, plans to keep up the trend

Here's the scenario: A., You've been getting your wireless print on with Canon's PIXMA MG8220, MG6220 or MG5320 all-in-one inkjet printer, and B., you own an iDevice. Well, feel free to do a little dance (just not this one), because Canon's added AirPrint support for the lucky three aforementioned. Simply (we hope) update your printer to the latest firmware, and boom, you'll be printing over iOS 4.2 and beyond. Better yet, it's also stated that the "majority" of forthcoming PIXMAs will follow in a similar AirPrint-enabled fashion. Need more info? Full PR is just past the break.

Zynga reveals 'most immersive' game: Mafia Wars 2

Zynga

Zynga vows its forthcoming "Mafia Wars 2" Facebook will make being bad feel real good. And nothing feels better than a hot cigar in the ear.

By Winda Benedetti

Zynga?? the king of social gaming?? continues its seemingly nonstop rollout of new games with yet another game announcement. The company behind hits like "FarmVille" and "CityVille" announced Tuesday that it will be launching "Mafia Wars 2" sometime "soon," revamping and updating a game that was an early?Facebook hit.

Although they haven't revealed many details about "Mafia Wars 2," Zynga says the game will be set in Las Vegas. According to the game's brand new website:

Build your crime empire piece by bloody piece in Mafia Wars 2, the latest evolution in games from Zynga. Grow your home turf, increase your power and experience a compelling storyline that takes you from the small-time crime of Casino Row to the international intrigue of globe-spanning crime cartels.

And don't go thinking you'll be playing "FarmVille" nicey-nice with your friends. Zynga says you'll be able to "beat down other players with a host of weapons ? crush them with baseball bats, shank them with knives, plug them full of holes with dozens of guns, roast them with flamethrowers, or blow them up with rocket launchers!"

For a sneak peek at the game's brutal tone, check out the following trailer (why yes, that IS someone getting a lit cigar shoved in their ear):

All in all, Zynga promises that "Mafia Wars 2" will be its "most immersive game to date" indicating it will feature 3-D graphics rather than the text-heavy style of the original "Mafia Wars."

The first "Mafia Wars" launched in 2008 and invited players to work with their Facebook friends to build virtual crime empires by completing a host of dirty virtual deeds. The game was an early hit for Zynga and, at its peak, boasted more than 28 million monthly active users, according to App Data. But the original "Mafia Wars" has steadily declined with time and in the face of so many newer games made by both Zynga and its competitors. It?currently counts a little more than 5 million monthly active users.

The "Mafia Wars 2" announcement follows a string of recent game launches from Zynga, a company that is thus far the unseatable king of Facebook gaming.

Earlier this month, Zynga launched the swashbuckling "Adventure World" game on Facebook and in August it launched the Facebook game "The Pioneer Trail." In June it released "Empires & Allies" to the social network?? a game that now boasts more than 37 million monthly active users. Meanwhile, it moved its popular iOS game "Words With Friends" over to Facebook in August.

But?Zynga hasn't confined its flurry of activity to Facebook. On Tuesday the company also announced that it's launching its "Hanging With Friends" game on Android mobile devices. Zynga only just launched the game on iOS devices in July.

Of course, all of this begs the question ... who has time to play all these games?

Progress in saving Norway ship in danger of sinking

Salvage teams reported progress on Friday as they pumped water from a tilting Norwegian cruise liner in danger of capsizing, a day after a fire on board killed two crew members and forced the evacuation of 260 other people.

Story: Two killed in Norway cruise liner fire

The MS Nordlys, which tilted critically at an angle of 21.7 degrees in the morning, had slowly righted itself and was listing at 16 degrees in the evening as additional pumps spewed water from the slanting ship's bowels, officials said.

Police Chief Jon Steven Hasseldal was optimistic but cautious. "This has been a positive development, but it is not over," Hasseldal told reporters in the town of Aalesund, 230 miles northwest of the capital of Oslo.

Five pumps were installed in the ship during the day after salvage teams were forced to leave the vessel in the night for fear it might capsize as more water gushed in.

"We have not managed to seal all holes in the hull," Hasseldal said, but added that they were pumping out more water that was coming in.

The MS Nordlys is one of 12 Hurtigruten shipping line vessels that ply Norway's craggy coast on the popular 1,500-mile route to the northeastern town of Kirkenes, high above the Arctic Circle and near the Russian border.

An explosive fire in the engine room on Thursday morning caused the evacuation of the ship, with 207 passengers and 55 crew on board. All the passengers were evacuated safely into lifeboats or after the boat pulled into harbor.

Two Norwegian crew members, aged 18 and 57, were found dead in the engine room while nine others were admitted to hospital, two with serious injuries, including from burns and smoke inhalation. Three rescue workers were treated for mild injuries from inhaling smoke.

'There was no panic'

Thick black smoke billowed from the stern of the ship when it sailed into Aalesund, forcing police to temporarily seal off parts of the town as smoke engulfed nearby buildings.

Passengers reported that the evacuation was orderly and calm.

"It was a well-organized evacuation," Danielle Passebois-Paya, a French tourist, said. "The crew did a really good job. Everything was calm and went smoothly. There was no panic."

Tommy Didriksen, one of crew members, said the fire caught them off-guard.

"It was an inferno, it happened unbelievably fast," Didriksen told reporters. "We just had to get people evacuated."

Hurtigruten said it was organizing emergency passports and providing money for passengers, some of whom had to leave their belongings on the boat during the evacuation. Some passengers have already headed home, officials said.

The shipping line's CEO Olav Fjell said that finding alternative transport for those who wanted to continue their journey to northern Norway along the coast would be difficult.

"Our other ships are fully booked so it has been difficult for us to find alternatives for those who would like to continue their journey," Fjell said.
