Factbox: Close races in the battle for U.S. Senate

(Reuters) - A year ago, Republicans seemed headed toward capturing the U.S. Senate, now controlled by Democrats by a 53-47 margin.

But then things went awry, beginning with the surprise decision in February by Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine to surrender her relatively safe seat and retire and, most recently, a series of attention-grabbing comments about rape by Republican candidates who had good odds of defeating Democrats.

Thirty-three of the Senate's 100 seats are being contested, of which 23 are held by Democrats.

Democrats are now slightly favored to retain the Senate though a tie is also possible, in which case the U.S. vice president would cast the decisive vote.

Here's a look at races that have been considered close over the past few weeks as the nation votes on Tuesday:

Maine

Angus King, a popular and independent former governor, is in a three-way race with Republican Secretary of State Charlie Summers and Democratic state senator Cynthia Dill.

National Democrats are not backing Dill, figuring King will win and side with them in deciding Senate control. But with King declining to say what he will do, the race for Snowe's seat is seen as a tossup.

Indiana

State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, a favorite of the conservative Tea Party movement, defeated Senator Richard Lugar in the 2012 Republican primary, complaining that the incumbent was not conservative enough.

But Mourdock may be too conservative for his Republican-leaning state. He had been running neck-and-neck with Democrat Joe Donnelly, a House of Representatives member since 2007, until Mourdock defended his position on abortion by saying that pregnancy resulting from rape was "something God intended to happen."

Donnelly has attacked Mourdock as an extremist while Mourdock ties Donnelly to President Barack Obama, referring to him in TV ads as "Obama Joe."

A poll released on Friday showed Donnelly with a lead of 11 percentage points.

Virginia

Republican George Allen and Democrat Tim Kaine, both former governors, are battling to fill the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Jim Webb, who ousted Allen from the Senate job six years ago.

Kaine, a former Democratic Party chairman, is running left of center; Allen, son of Hall-of-Fame football coach George Allen, is running to the right.

Massachusetts

With voters fed up with partisan gridlock, Republican Senator Scott Brown has focused on his credentials as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress.

Yet two years after being elected to fill the seat vacated by the death of Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy, Brown is fighting for political survival. He is being challenged by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, a Harvard professor and consumer advocate.

Wisconsin

The race to replace retiring Democratic Senator Herb Kohl pits a former conservative Republican governor, Tommy Thompson, against a liberal congresswoman, Democrat Tammy Baldwin, who would be the chamber's first openly gay member.

Polls initially showed Thompson leading. But Baldwin moved up by blasting him for having worked as a high-priced lobbyist after serving in the administration of President George W. Bush.

Connecticut

Republican Linda McMahon, a former executive director of World Wrestling Entertainment, is running a stronger campaign for the Senate this year than she did her first time around in 2010.

Having revamped strategy to spend more face time with voters, she is in a close race with three-term Democratic Representative Chris Murphy. The winner will replace Senator Joe Lieberman, an independent who is retiring.

Montana

Democrat Jon Tester, who narrowly won his first term in the Senate in 2006, is in another close race.

Tester is being challenged by Denny Rehberg, a six-term Republican House member. Their battle has largely focused on who better reflects Montana versus who has "gone Washington."

North Dakota

When Democratic Senator Kent Conrad announced last year he would not run for re-election, his conservative state of North Dakota looked like a potential pickup for Republicans.

But former state Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp, running as a centrist Democrat who has disagreements with Obama, has waged a surprisingly strong campaign against first-term Republican Congressman Rick Berg.

Arizona

Former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona is trying to become the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Arizona since 1988.

Party leaders figure Carmona may benefit in this border state from his Hispanic descent. He is opposed by Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, a Tea Party favorite endorsed by 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

Nevada

The House Ethics Committee announced in July it would investigate Democratic Representative Shelley Berkley, complicating her bid to unseat Republican Senator Dean Heller.

But she has denied any wrongdoing in helping save a hospital program associated with her husband, and has stayed in a close race with Heller. He was appointed to the Senate last year to replace John Ensign, who resigned amid his own ethics problems.

Nebraska

Former Senator Bob Kerrey, a Democrat, is trying to return to the Senate but has faced a strong opponent in conservative Nebraska state Senator Deb Fischer, who upset two opponents in the state's Republican primary race.

Kerrey has suffered from the fact that he has been living in New York for the past 10 years. He lagged for months in polls but appeared to be closing the gap in the final two weeks of the campaign.

The seat is now held by retiring Democratic Senator Ben Nelson.

Trupanion Celebrates Service Dogs: Ravi and Laurel's Story

Trupanion is always excited to hear of special relationships between pets and their owners. Ravi, a scruffy stray roaming for a place to live, found an opportunity to change the life of others by becoming a Hearing Assistance Dog. He proved to be an intelligent and well-mannered dog by Dogs for the Deaf and eventually went on to meet his best friend, Laurel, who needed him just as much as he needed her.

After wandering the streets of California, an animal shelter picked up a stray dog and contacted Dogs for the Deaf to figure out a possible opportunity. The organization works with dogs to provide effective training in assistance for the deaf and hard of hearing. With seven months of love and training down Ravi?s collar, he passed his test to become a Hearing Assistance Dog.

Ravi was matched with Laurel, a local Californian who was hard of hearing. To ensure his safety and comfort, Dogs for the Deaf interviewed Laurel, as they do with any future candidates. Her house was inspected to be sure it had a fenced yard and no other pets were living there. Laurel then agreed to maintain a healthy life for Ravi by providing healthcare, grooming and training.

Ravi and Laurel spent five days getting to know each other, with the help of a representative from Dogs for the Deaf. That week, the new pair practiced Ravi?s training techniques focusing on ongoing daily sounds with one-on-one help from her DFD representative. Just by a light touch of his paws, he becomes a part of every task that happens in Laurel?s household.

Each day, Ravi wakes up Laurel at the sound of her alarm. As she prepares for her day, he stays close to inform her of any sound: the possible sound of a fire alarm or a knock at the door. Ravi will investigate the sound, and then inform her in the best way possible by a gentle tap of her legs with her paws and leading her to the commotion. On his way to work with Laurel, he sports his bright orange vest and leash, making everyone around him aware of how special he is. In case that isn?t enough to let people know he is a service dog, Laurel carries around a Guide to Assistance Guide Dogs and an up-to-date ID card to protect his and her rights.

Since they?ve been together, Ravi has traveled to Michigan with Laurel. He spends the day napping at her feet while she tends to her work. The pair has become quite close because they need each other equally.

Trupanion celebrates the bond between Laurel and Ravi and the bond between all dogs and their companions. What makes the bond between you and your pet special? Leave a comment or send your story to mytrustory@trupanion.com.

Mars Curiosity about to really shake things up

(AP) ? Mars Curiosity is about to take its first sip of the red planet's sand. But only after NASA's rover plays bartender to make sure the dry dust is shaken, not stirred.

The rover's scoop will dig into the sand Saturday. Then the action starts. The end of the rover's 220-pound arm will shake "at a nice tooth-rattling vibration level" for eight hours, like a Martian martini mixer gone mad, said mission sampling chief Daniel Limonadi said.

"It kind of looks and feels like if you open the hood of your car with the engine running," Limonadi said, making engine noises in a Thursday NASA telephone press conference.

That heavy shaking will vibrate the fine dust grains through the rover chemical testing system to cleanse it of unwanted residual Earth grease. That's important for the sensitive scientific instruments that are the keystone to the $2.5 billion mission that launched last year.

The rover landed in August and has traveled three-tenths of a mile, taking pictures and analyzing the Martian air.

For the next week or two, Curiosity will scoop, shake and dump sand out three times, like a robotic version of cleaning its mouth out with mouthwash, Limonadi said. The fourth time, the rover will slowly pour "a half a baby aspirin pill of material" into the mobile lab to start a complex chemical analysis, he said.

There's nothing that seems special about the sand that will be tested and that's why NASA picked it out. It's good to start with "boring safe Martian sand dune," Limonadi said.

The car-sized rover has a complex chemical lab, a scoop and a drill to look for the basic ingredients of life, including carbon-based compounds, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur and oxygen. This will be the first time the chemistry lab will be used. In about a month, after going to a newer more interesting location, the rover will start drilling into the ground for samples.

Obama gets tough on Romney, campaign considers changes

DENVER (Reuters) - One day after a muted performance in a presidential debate, President Barack Obama got tough on Republican rival Mitt Romney on Thursday as the Democrat's re-election campaign vowed to learn lessons from the setback.

A feisty Obama told a rally of some 12,000 people that the former Massachusetts governor was untruthful during Tuesday's 90-minute debate in Denver, which most observers reckoned the Republican won.

"When I got onto the stage, I met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney," Obama said.

"But it couldn't have been Mitt Romney, because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. The fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that."

Often criticized for being wooden, Romney's aggressive debate performance gave his campaign a burst of energy after weeks of setbacks.

Looking at times tired and displeased, Obama did not seize opportunities to attack the Republican on his business record at Bain Capital, the "47 percent" video and his refusal to release more income tax returns.

With two more presidential debates before the November 6 Election Day, senior aide David Axelrod said the Obama campaign would adjust its strategy as a result of the debate.

"We are going to take a hard look at this and we are going to have to make some adjustments as to where to draw the lines in these debates and how to use our time," he told reporters.

Romney prepared for the Denver encounter with days of mock debates and was more ready to go on the offensive against Obama in detailed discussion on taxes, jobs, energy and the budget deficit.

Obama is unlikely to squeeze in much more preparation for the two other debates, on October 16 in New York and on October 22 in Florida, Axelrod said.

"I don't see us adding huge amounts of additional prep time. I think there are some strategic adjustments that have to be made and we'll make them," he said.

Part of the Obama strategy will be to attack Romney for what it says are untruthful statements during the debate on his tax plan, Medicare and deficit cutting, as well as pressing him on what appeared to be changes in position on issues like bank regulation.

Romney had a slight swagger about him as he made a surprise visit to a meeting of conservatives in Colorado on Thursday morning. The crowd whooped and cheered as he was introduced.

"Last night I thought was a great opportunity for the American people to see two very different visions for the country. And I think it was helpful to be able to describe those visions," he said.

POLL BOOST FOR ROMNEY

The debate win was badly needed by Romney, whose poll numbers had dropped in recent weeks after several missteps and the release of a damaging video showed him disparaging 47 percent of the electorate as dependent on government aid.

Going into the debate, Obama held a lead of 5 to 6 percentage points over Romney in most national polls, and is ahead by at least narrow margins in almost all the battleground states where the election will be decided.

But Romney is now viewed positively by 51 percent of voters, the first time he has enjoyed a net positive in the presidential race, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken after the debate. Obama's favorability rating remained unchanged at 56 percent.

Analysts said they still favored the Democratic president's re-election chances.

"Nobody is going to switch sides on the basis of this debate," said Samuel Popkin, a political science professor at the University of California at San Diego.

With the election little more than a month away, Romney might be running out of time to seize the lead. Voting has already begun in some form or another in 35 states including in battlegrounds like Ohio and Iowa.

"For now we'll chalk this up as a wake-up call for the president, who still has a vastly superior campaign organization and owns the pivotal issue of Medicare," Greg Valliere, chief political analyst at Potomac Research Group, wrote in a note to clients.

"But this is still a winnable election for Romney and that was the ultimate take-away last night," he said.

In Europe, where leaders and finance officials have worked closely with the Obama administration to resolve the euro debt crisis, there was consternation at Romney's singling out of deficit-ridden Spain as a poorly administered economy.

"Romney is making analogies that aren't based on reality," Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said after a meeting of his center-right party.

France's Le Monde was surprised by the sub-par performance of Obama, who wowed European crowds during his historic 2008 election bid.

"Where did the favorite go?" the newspaper asked on its front page.

Republicans who were worried that Romney's recent dip in polls might also drag down candidates for the House of Representatives and Senate at the election were relieved.

"Republicans everywhere have reason to be optimistic after last night's performance," said Senator Mike Lee, a favorite of Tea Party conservatives who have often been wary of Romney as too moderate.

Within hours of the debate, Republicans launched a string of new ads hoping to capitalize on Romney's momentum. One had him presenting his plan for creating 12 million new jobs. Another, aired in Wisconsin by the Super PAC Restore Our Future, called on voters to demand better than Obama's "new normal" economy.

Romney's support of the coal industry during the debate sent coal company stocks up on Thursday. The Dow Jones coal index was 5.05 percent higher.

But shares of U.S. hospital operators fell as Romney's strong showing raised doubts about the future of Obama's 2010 healthcare reform.

Who did NFL players vote as league's No. 1?

Who is the NFL's best player?

It's a difficult question given the scores of stars in the league, the vastly differing and incomparable positions they play, and the interminable debates centered on stats vs. rings.

Yet when it comes to numbers and hardware, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has both. So it came as little surprise that the NFL's reigning MVP was voted No. 1 to cap The Top 100 Players of 2012, a 10-part NFL Network series determined by the votes of active players.

"It's very humbling, it's a great honor," Rodgers said Wednesday night on NFLN after his ranking was revealed (he was No. 11 last year).

"Any time you're recognized with that professional respect from your peers, that really means a lot to me. So I gotta thank them for the votes."

MORE TOP 100: ?100-91 | 90-81 | 80-71 | 70-61 | 60-51 | 50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-11

After earning Super Bowl XLV MVP honors to finish the 2010 season, Rodgers led the Packers to a league-best 15-1 ledger in 2011 and set a single-season record for passer rating (122.5) after throwing for 4,643 yards and 45 TDs (vs. just 6 INTs) in only 15 games. He didn't set as many new marks as New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees did in 2011 but again came out on top (NFL writers selected him as last year's MVP) after the players ranked Brees at No. 2.

Though Rodgers was unable to lead the Pack to a Super Bowl repeat, he did bag another honor that further differentiates his expanding resume from that of Brett Favre, the legendary predecessor many thought Rodgers could never successfully replace in Titletown.

But the current top dog in the NFL has a reasonable shot to become the best quarterback, if not best the best player, in the storied history of the Packers.

Other noteworthy items include Detroit Lions WR Calvin "Megatron" Johnson finishing as the top non-quarterback, New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis ranking as the top defender, and Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson earning top tailback honors despite his rash of injuries (including a torn ACL and MCL) in 2011.

One Hall of Famer who wasn't necessarily on board with the series' outcome was NFLN analyst Deion Sanders, who said: "Why are the quarterbacks always in the front of the line? For everything? I don't understand that."

Here's the entire top 10:

  • 1. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Packers
  • 2. Drew Brees, QB, Saints
  • 3. Calvin Johnson, WR, Lions
  • 4. Tom Brady, QB, Patriots

What Is A Domain Name? | www ... - Online Success Path

Word Wide WebMost of you probably already know what a domain name is, but I don?t want to make assumptions as to what everyone knows at this point, so I?m going to assume that we will have some complete beginners here.? And that?s quite all right to be a beginner.? Everyone must start at the beginning.

I?ll share with you information about a domain name ? what it is, how to choose a domain name, and where to get one.? A domain is one of the required elements of a website.

A domain name is the address of a website ? such as yoursite.com ? it?s like a house address and represents the address of your home on the World Wide Web.? Your domain name is the way in which people can find your website.? For example, the domain of the site you are on right now is onlinesuccesspath.com.

The Internet will automatically assume it needs to add http:// in front of a domain name that you type into a browser.? So when you type in www. followed by a domain name, you may notice that your web browser displays it as http://www.yoursite.com.? You don?t have to literally type in the http://, as the browser will insert that by default.

Either way, whether you see this automatically included in your web browser or not, whatever browser you are using (such as Firefox or Internet Explorer) will assume the protocol is http:// followed by the www address you have typed in.? You simply type in www. followed by the site name you want to view.

Http stands for Hypter Text Transfer Protocol, and it is the way in which browsers and web servers exchange data, allowing you to surf the web and find what you are looking for.

web home page nameYour domain represents the ?home? page of your website, but as you add new pages to your site, the URL structure will change to reflect where to find a particular page on your site within the internet.? For example, a URL could look like this:? www.yoursite.com/articles/gardening.html.

URL stands for ?Uniform Resource Locator.? In the example above, we see the home page of the website as www.yoursitename.com.??The domain is yoursitename.com.? We also see a folder called ?articles? which is being used to house articles for that site.? We see a gardening article from the ?articles? folder called gardening.html.

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.? This is simply computer code.? It?s the language used to write content on the Web.? But not to worry ? as we get into web editors, you?ll see how your editor will take care of the special coding for you.? So there won?t be a lot that you?ll have to know about this computer language when you get ready to build your website pages.

A URL consists of various sections (including the domain name) that, when combined, will point to a specific page of a website. Obviously, there will be more than just a home page with the domain name for a website ? unless one is simply using a one-page website, also referred to as a squeeze page.

A website can consist of as many pages as your hosting account will support in terms of the web space that your combined pages utilize.? In today?s times, even a small hosting package will almost always support as many pages as you need.

dot com extensionWhen choosing a domain name, you?ll also pick an extension to go with that name ? such as .com (the most popular extension).?

Here are just a few types of domain name extensions ? but keep in mind that for business purposes, you can?t go wrong with a .com extension.? The reason is that it?s the first extension that comes to mind when people type in a domain in their web browser.

.com ? Stands for ?commercial? and is the most widely used extension.? Businesses generally prefer a .com domain because it?s the most highly recognized symbol for an online presence.

.net ? Stands for ?network? and is commonly used by Internet service providers, web hosting companies, or other businesses that are involved in the infrastructure of the Internet.? Some businesses may choose this extension for intranet websites.

.org ? Stands for ?organization? and is primary used by non-profit organizations.

.biz ? Stands for ?business? and is used for small business sites in some cases (However, the .com choice is still the preferred option for a business, regardless of the size of that business.)

.info ? Stands for ?information? and is used for credible resources on the web which provide information.

.tv ? Stands for ?television? and is used in the entertainment or media industries.

.edu ? Stands for ?education? and is limited to educational institutions such as colleges and universities or other accredited schools.

.gov ? Stands for ?government? and is limited to government agencies in the U.S.

You can explore other domain extensions at Wikipedia.

In the next post, I?ll cover tips for choosing a domain name . . . followed by how to purchase your domain.

Margaret Paul, Ph.D.: Is This Love or Emotional Dependency?

One of my clients, whose ex-girlfriend recently broke up with him, asked me the following question:

I think I still love her, but is this love or just emotional dependency? Many times I ask myself if falling in love comes from the wounded self because (for me at least) it feels as if I can't live without the other person. When I give love from the heart, I don't expect anything back, but when I "fall in love" I think this is a different energy.

Which Part of You Is In Love?

Falling in love can come from two different inner states. When you fall in love from the wounded self -- the ego self -- it is not so much the person you love, but how he or she loves you. You are handing over to the other person the responsibility for your self-worth and wellbeing, and if he or she does a good job of attending to you in the way you want to be attended to, then you may say you are "in love."

When it feels as if you can't live without the other person, it is emotional dependency. The part of you that is "in love" is really a child or adolescent who is needy for love because you are not giving love to yourself or to others. There is an emptiness inside that you expect someone else to fill, because you are not taking responsibility for your own feelings of self-worth. You are attaching your worth to another's love, which is why you can't live without that person.

When you fall in love as a loving adult instead of as a wounded, needy child or adolescent, your need for the relationship is totally different. As a loving adult, you have learned how to fill yourself with love and define your own worth. Instead of needing someone to fill you and make you feel lovable and worthy, you already feel worthy and full of love. You experience this inner fullness because you have learned how to take full responsibility for your own feelings and needs, and you have learned to fill yourself with love from a spiritual source. This fullness overflows and you want to share this love with another person, another loving adult who is also filled with love. Your desire is to share love rather than to get love.

Choosing From Your Wounded Self or Your Loving Adult

The kind of person you will pick will be totally different when a loving adult is choosing, than when your wounded self is choosing. The people we pick have a similar level of woundedness and a similar level of emotional health. Obviously, the more you have done your inner healing work to bring love within, and the more you have learned to take loving care of yourself, the more you will be attracted to someone who also does this.

When you pick someone from your wounded self, you will pick someone whom you believe wants the job of filling you up. The problem is that the other person may be attempting to fill you up in the hopes that you will also fill up him or her. Two people who each want to get love rather than share love will eventually find themselves very disappointed with each other. They will each blame the other for not loving them in the way they want to be loved. When relationships break up, it is often because one or both partners are not taking responsibility for their own feelings and self-worth and are blaming the other for their resulting unhappiness.

If you are so attached to someone that you feel you can't live without that person, try learning to give to yourself and others what it is you want from this person. Your job is to become the person to yourself that you want the other person to be. Then you will be able to be "in love" rather than "in need." You will be able to love another person for who he or she is, rather than for what this person can do for you. Instead of needing to get love, you can give love from the heart for the joy of it, and feel filled in the giving.

Windows Phone 7.8 update gets shown off

Are you your own worst enemy? If so, the following gadgets might be able to help you overcome some?relatively minor shortcomings. That is to... Read more

10 hrs.

Users of Windows Phone might have felt a bit put out at the news that Windows Phone 8, with all its fancy new features, would not be coming to their hardware ? even the flagship Nokia Lumia 900. But all is not lost: one of the cooler pieces, the customizable start screen, will in fact be coming to older handsets. And Microsoft has just put up a little demo of it on video.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that doesn't mean we get privileged information about Microsoft's products and services, nor does it influence our opinion of them.)

No doubt it's a cool feature for homescreen customization, more straightforward than Android's widgets and more robust than iOS's... nothing. Most users will be happy to have the extra functionality.

But there's still consternation among purchasers of the much-hyped Lumia 900: many feel it was little more than a bait and switch to sell the device as a top-of-the-line one only to make it obsolete almost instantly with a new OS it can't use. There's truth to that, and Android and iOS customers know the sting of seeing a new version of their favored OS debut with no plans to bring it to older devices.

The update should come to any phone currently running Windows?7.5 "Mango." There's a little more info here at the page for the update, but at the moment there are only a couple features listed, and no date for release.

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung (updated)

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung updated Judge Koh enjoins sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung

Thought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside? Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month -- and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again. Still, it's certainly bad news for the Korean company, but given its expansive stable of other slates still on sale combined with its recent economic performance, we're sure Samsung can weather the storm while the courtroom fireworks continue.

Update 1: All Things D got a copy of Koh's order, and we just gave it a quick read. Turns out that she granted the injunction due to the strength of the merits of Apple's case and the unlikelihood that Samsung would invalidate Apple's design patent -- the court already held that the 10.1 is "virtually indistinguishable" from the iPad's design and likely infringes Apple's IP. Furthermore, Judge Koh held that, because Apple and Samsung are direct competitors in the tablet space and "design mattered more to customers in making tablet purchases," Apple would be irreparably harmed by further 10.1 sales. Those two factors outweighed any hardship suffered by Samsung, and thus, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was stricken from US shelves.

Update 2: Well, that didn't take long -- a mere five hours after Judge Koh's order, Samsung filed an appeal, according to Foss Patents.

Building with the Boys: Tim and Justin Are Building, AGAIN, This ...

The boys are back, this time I think they are just stalking me.

You may recall Tim Loecker and Justin Kettler when I wrote for D Home Mag, when I lauded them for saving North Dallas ranches one house at a time. It seems these two can never be satisfied with their home, which is why I love them.

It all began with a 2,400-square-foot cottage on Cromwell Drive, just a couple of blocks from our 3550 Ainsworth, which was our very first Dallas dirt. They flipped Cromwell and followed it up with three more projects, including a 2,500-square foot rancher near Forest and Midway, and a 4,000-square-foot fairy tale on Princess Lane that had, when they bought it, ADA-approved wide doorways and handlebars in all showers. Seriously: the place was a halfway home for people recovering from who knows what. After selling Princess, the two bought and renovated an original owner mid-century modern on Bobbitt Drive. This is where it got a little freaky for me: we also had lived about half a block away, at 4307 Melissa Lane. They lived on Bobbitt a couple of years, sold it, and now ? you?ve got it ? the boys are moving CTC: Closer to Candy! But this time, they have ditched the remodel and are building from scratch. As in, they scraped a post-WWII mini rancher on Azalea built in 1949 and are in the process of building a new home. And they are going to share the entire experience with you right here on CandysDirt.com.

It must have been hard for the guys to scrape that ranch, because I know how much they love them. Ranches have good bones, they once told me. They were built with an infrastructure of slow-grown, sturdy wood and easy-to-open floor plans.?Well, so was I but someday we all gotta go, right? ?Both guys always participated in their too-many-now-to count renovations, digging in with sledgehammers, getting knee-deep in sawdust, changing the floor plan, and staying hands-on with every last detail from designing cabinetry to choosing outlet covers. ?Despite the bruises, gashes, black toenails, and occasional (or frequent) difference of opinion, the guys consider this a side hobby.? Loecker is a senior vice president for a global public relations firm. Kettler is a regional manager for a financial services company.? Building new has a whole new spin as they are no longer going to be managing the project, though no doubt they will be hands on.

?Now we are letting our builder do the contracting while we can focus on researching design and materials, giving input, and documenting the process in pictures.? says Justin.? ?This approach is a much better fit with our day job demands, and better for our sanity.?

?All of our friends seem to be getting married and having babies,? says Tim. ?We?d rather just do another house together.? It?s our version of renewing our vows and giving birth?every couple of years!?

Stay tuned for Building with the Boys. First episode: The big decision: Choosing a builder to create your next home.

Rand Paul Trying To Add ?Personhood? Amendment To Flood ...

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul is?trying to attach an amendment that would define personhood as beginning at fertilization?to a bill regarding flood insurance:

WASHINGTON ? Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) moved this week to hold a noncontroversial flood insurance bill hostage until the Senate agrees that life begins at fertilization.

The bill, which would financially boost the National Flood Insurance Program on the cusp of hurricane season, had been expected to pass easily in the Senate. But since Paul on Monday offered an unrelated ?fetal personhood? amendment, which would give legal protections to fetuses from the moment of fertilization, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is threatening to halt progress on the legislation.

?I?m told last night that one of our Republican senators wants to offer an amendment ? listen to this one ? wants to offer an amendment on when life begins,? Reid said on the Senate floor Tuesday. ?I am not going to put up with that on flood insurance. I can be condemned by outside sources; my friends can say, ?Let them have a vote on it.? There will not be a vote on that on flood insurance. We?ll either do flood insurance with the amendments that deal with flood insurance, or we won?t do it. We?ll have an extension.?

Reid has allowed Republicans to attach unrelated amendments to other important bills in the past few months. Most notably, he?let the Senate vote?on a contraception-related amendment, proposed by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), to a transportation bill. But Reid called Paul?s measure ?ridiculous? and ?outlandish,? and asked Republicans to deal with him on ?their side of the aisle.?

Paul told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that he is ?just trying to get a vote for people who elected me.?

?Can you believe that they?re exasperated with me?? he said, responding to criticism of his attempt to attach the unrelated amendment. ?If [Reid will] give me a freestanding vote, I?ll take a freestanding vote any time.?

Yea, whatever Senator. What I want to know is the answer to a very simple question which, as a member of the Paul family, you ought to be very familiar with ?-?which part of the Constitution authorizes Congress to determine that life begins at fertilization?

Notwithstanding, and giving him due credit for, his foreign policy positions, my patience with Senator Paul is nearing an end.

How the CCNA Certification Relates to IPv6 | Academy of Computer ...

Before taking the Cisco Certified Network Associate exam, or CCNA, it is absolutely essential to understand both the ?why? and the ?how? of the new and emerging IPv6 technology. This is a crucial part of the exam and, as the future of the internet in generally, it?s pretty important to understand how it works. Before that, though, it?s even more important to understand why there is even a need for IPv6 technologies, as well as how they?re be implemented in a world that has largely been completely constructed based on the IPv4 specification.

Looking at the Origins of the IPv4 Specification

Even though the actual use of IPv6 in real world applications is relatively new, its roots begin more than two decades ago in 1990. That was the first year when tech experts began to predict that IPv4 address space would actually run out do the explosive growth of connected devices. Even in a world that couldn?t foresee the coming smartphone and tablet revolution that enabled ?everything everywhere? connectivity, this was a real concern.

In 1992, IPv4 classes A, B, and C, were joined by CIDR, or Classless Internet Domain Routing. This technology was essentially developed to promote greater efficiency within IPv4 environments, allowing blocks to be assigned more slowly and preventing the IP catastrophe that many analysts were predicting at the time. While this was a great way to ?kick the can down the road,? it was not a permanent solution.

Steps toward a more lasting solution began in 1993, when the Internet Engineering Task Force recognized the need for an entirely new protocol that would highly scalable in a world full of connected devices. In response, the IETF created the IP Next Generation Group to study, analyze, and plan the deployment of a new IP protocol that would last far longer than the aging IPv4. The group became known as IPng, and it got to work pretty quickly. By 1994, the group?s work was being approved and standardized by a number of internet standards committees, and it was officially given the IPv6 designation later that year.

Test implementations followed fork the next half-decade and, in 1999, regional internet registries assigned the first block of IPv6 addresses for non-experimental uses. This followed the releasing of patches and operating system updates to enable the parsing and processing of IPv6 address blocks just a few years earlier, and the technology was officially on its way.

Examining the Need for a New IP Address Specification

It was more than 20 years ago that experts first predicted that IPv4 address blocks would run out. The assignment of these addresses, and the relative lack of new ones to assign, has increased exponentially in the last decade alone. In 2002, a full 28 percent of IPv4 address blocks were still available for use around the world. By the present decade, that number had dropped by nearly two-thirds to just 10 percent. Without the development of the IPv6 specification, the future of the internet would currently be experiencing a real threat to its continued viability and use.

The IPv4 specification is a 32-bit construction, which allows for a grand total of 4,294,967,296 address blocks before the system simply runs out of options and capacity. Comparatively, IPv6 specification employes a 128-bit structure which permits for a vastly larger sea of potential address blocks. Indeed, the total number of IPv6 address blocks available for allocation around the world is 3.4 x1038, which experts believe can last anywhere from a few decades up to a half-century before a more advanced standard needs to once again be developed due to rising demand and a dearth of available blocks.

The IPv6 specification is also far more engaged with advanced hierarchies that make internet routing more efficient. This is seen as one of the main problems with IPv4, especially given the exponential growth of the internet and connected devices over the past two decades. The technology is not only much more vast and available, but actually faster at doing the exact same tasks that the IPv4 table is currently charged with handling.

A Commitment to Global Fairness with IPv6 Technologies

One of the interesting things about IPv4 is that the technology was actually split among several global governing bodies that served specific regions of the planet. Each governing authority managed the granting and distribution of IPv4 blocks to every country within its purview, and the structure still being used looks like this:

- ARIN, for North America, the Caribbean, and some North Atlantic locations
- AfriNIC, serving the African continent and Indian Ocean island nations
- APNIC, for the Asia-Pacific region and Oceania
- LACNIC, for South America and non-ARIN parts of the Caribbean
- RIPE NCC, for Europe and the Middle East

Despite these five organizations and their relatively equal holdings around the world, the ARIN organization is responsible for granting a full 74 percent of the IPv4 address blocks currently in use. That?s an astounding disparity between the regions, and it?s something that IPv6 has aimed to fix with the way it is deployed. Unlike IPv4, the technology has a single and global granting body, as well as a global prefix structure, that is designed to promote greater fairness in the assignment of addresses.

Where is IPv6 Now, and Where Will it Go in the Future?

Presently, much of the world is still stuck on the IPv4 standard as governments and internet service providers slowly migrate to the newer standard. While much of China and Korea are both running on the IPv6 standard for both traditional and mobile internet devices, the United States has lagged behind in implementation. The federal government announced a goal to be compatible with the technology by 2008, and has largely met that standard; the wireless provider T-Mobile has deployed IPv6 to its mobile networks; but other than these two major developments, the United States still relies heavily on IPv4. This partially makes sense, however, given that the continent is responsible for 74 percent of the specification?s allocation around the world.

Looking to the future, IPv6 adoption will increase because it has to. While it is currently ?dual stacked? with IPv4 address blocks, that will change as IPv4 addresses simply run out and people around the world are forced to migrate to the newer standard. Given the fast rate of IPv4 address disbursement, this is likely to happen within the present decade.

Muzak redivivus? Streaming subscription audio - eluyiirut's Space

By Jon Jermey

The following paragraphs are extracted from an article published in the June 2012 issue of Online Currents.*

THE FALL AND RISE OF MUZAK

In 1934 the Muzak Holdings company was established in the US to pipe soothing recorded music via cables into offices, department stores and other public places in many US cities. Seventy-eight years later, having staved off bankruptcy in 2009, Muzak Holdings is still with us, though its delivery methods have changed to embrace new technologies, and it now offers its clients a much broader range of ?channels?. Small wonder, then, that internet entrepreneurs have decided to take a leaf from its book and offer their clients what essentially amounts to the same service (though primped, polished and jazzed-up for the web) ? an endless stream of recorded music, matched to your specifications and delivered on demand.

?INTERNET RADIO

The more immediate roots of streaming audio lie in the internet radio movement. There are currently tens of thousands of internet ?radio? stations, accessible via the web, which broadcast not through the airwaves but over internet cables and connections. Some provide just one ?channel? of music, while others like SomaFM offer more than a dozen. Despite regular skirmishes with recording industry bodies over royalty fees and the potential for copyright infringement, internet radio has become a large industry. Internet radio stations are typically free for the user to access. Some are supported by advertising, others by donations, while public broadcasters, like the BBC in Britain and the ABC in Australia, typically maintain internet radio channels as adjuncts to their free-to-air broadcast activities.

?STREAMING SUBSCRIPTION AUDIO

The user of internet radio can choose from a vast range of channels, offering a huge variety of performers and types of music from baroque to heavy metal. From here it is a relatively small step to allowing users to select, in advance, the exact tracks they want to hear. This is the domain of streaming subscription audio. Originally offered almost as an afterthought by providers selling downloadable music tracks, the subscription audio model has grown to a level of size and sophistication which challenges the ownership model. Now there are many companies offering similar facilities, so prices are going down and the level of service ? and the number of tracks available ? has risen steadily over time. Audio streaming is the recording industry?s latest and best response to the threat of music piracy. Though relatively new in Australia, it is becoming big business in the US.

The basic model is simple: a provider acquires the necessary licences to offer a vast number of high-quality music tracks to its clients on a streaming basis, in return for a monthly or yearly fee: subscribers are permitted to play any track but not to retain the track on their system, so that when the subscription ends, so does their legal access to the music. Subscribers can search the provider?s database for music or performers, and select tracks they want to hear. These are ?queued? on the server and sent to the subscriber?s PC, usually via a web browser. Subscribers can play any track as often as they want to hear it, exactly as if they owned the music. Their choices are saved when they go offline, and they can log in from any other browser and access their music queue from there, though only one user can be logged in to a particular account at any time. Some providers extend the same functionality to mobile devices like mobile phones and Android tablets.

Because the service on offer is essentially the same from each provider, competition is mainly on price, the number of tracks available, and the range of mobile devices supported.

BCS gets boot in favor of 4-team playoff

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The best way to determine a major college football champion seemed so obvious to so many for so long. Just have a playoff.

Now the people in charge of making that decision are on board, too.

Come 2014, the BCS is out. Playoffs are in.

A committee of university presidents approved a plan Tuesday for a four-team playoff put forward by commissioners of the top football conferences.

For years, the decision-makers had balked at any type of playoff because they said it would diminish the importance of the regular season. If only two teams had a chance to win a championship in the postseason, even one loss could be too many. That made for some high stakes regular-season matchups. As recently as 2008, Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive proposed the type of plan adopted Tuesday, and it was quickly shot down.

Four years later, minds changed.

"It's a great day for college football," BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock said. "As soon as the commissioners realized they could do this and protect the regular season, the light went on for everybody."

The move completes a six-month process for the commissioners, who have been working on a new way to determine a major college football champ after years of griping from fans. The latest configuration is certain to make even more money for the schools than the old system ? and it still won't satisfy everyone. Some will think it's too small and, yes, there are some who liked things just the way they are.

"There were differences of views," Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said. "I think it would be a serious mistake to assume it was a rubber stamp."

Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman was the most notable holdout. He had said that he preferred the status quo or a tweak of the Bowl Championship Series. Perlman said the playoff still wouldn't be his first choice, but he was not going to stand in the way of progress. After the commissioners presented their proposal to the presidents, it took the CEOs about an hour and a half to come to a decision.

"This is the package that was put forth and we will strongly support it," Perlman said.

Instead of simply matching the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a title game after the regular season, the way the BCS has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals.

The BCS has been a constant target for criticism. Lawmakers have railed against it. A political action committee was formed dedicated to its destruction. The Justice Department looked into whether it broke antitrust laws. Even President Obama said he wanted a playoff.

Now it's a reality.

No. 1 will play No. 4, and No. 2 will play No. 3 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The sites of those games will rotate among six bowls. The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., is guaranteed a spot, and the to-be-determined site of the newly formed bowl created by the SEC and Big 12 is likely to be another, Slive said.

The other current BCS bowls ? the Orange, Sugar and Fiesta ? are not yet guaranteed spots in the rotation, but will get first crack at bidding for them. The Cotton Bowl, played at the $1.1 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, has long wanted to be part of the BCS and will no doubt push to be a part of the rotation, possibly as host to the Big 12-SEC game.

The winners of the semis will advance to the championship on the first Monday in January that is six or more days after the last semifinal. The first "Championship Monday" is set for Jan. 12, 2015.

The site of the title game will move around the way the Super Bowl does, with cities bidding for the right to host.

The teams will be selected by a committee, similar to the way the NCAA basketball tournament field is set. The men's tournament has 68 teams, and 37 at-large bids.

The football committee will have a much tougher task, trying to whittle the field down to four. This season, 125 schools will play at the highest level of college football.

Among the factors the committee will consider is won-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head results and whether a team is a conference champion. The selection committee will also play a part in creating matchups for games at the four sites that do not hold a semifinal in a given year.

"I think it's tremendous progress," said Washington State coach Mike Leach, a playoff proponent. "Five years ago there wasn't even dialogue about a playoff. Instead of diving in the water, they dipped their toes in. I think it's' going to be ridiculously exciting and it's going to generate a bunch of money. I wish they dived in."

Leach predicted that the playoff field would eventually grow.

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez, on the other hand, was happy to keep it small, and wants it to stay that way.

"I may be in the minority. I think we had a pretty good thing going," he said. "If it stays at four I think it will be fine. Think it will be pretty exciting."

No one has put a hard number on it yet, but this new format figures to more than double the TV revenue of the current BCS and Rose Bowl contracts. Those pay out about $155 million annually.

The commissioners want to lock in this format for 12 years with a television partner. The current BCS deal with ESPN runs through the 2013 season. The new format will be presented to potential TV partners in the fall, starting with ESPN.

There are still some details to work out, such as who will be on the committee and how exactly the money will be distributed among the conferences. But everybody in charge is on board.

While lower divisions of college football already have a playoff, the highest level has for decades used bowls and polls to determine its champion. Those days are coming to an end.

"A milestone that's good for college football," Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford called it.

And a long time coming.
