Re.vu

There's a subset of personal Webpage services that are less personal and more professional. They're r?sum?-based landing pages, and Re.vu (free) is our favorite because it delivers a graphical look at your life perfect for prospective employers to take it all in. And it does it all for free.

The key to using Re.vu (pronounced "review") is to have an account with LinkedIn, the professional social network (a.k.a. the one where you try to get a job rather than post pictures of your friends at parties). When you set up a Re.vu account, you're asked to utilize its LinkedIn importer, so it can build your r?sum? timeline based on the data stored at social network. The timeline is the core of your r?sum? landing page at re.vu/username. (You can upload your own standard r?sum? for employers to download, too.)

Page creation is similar to that on other landing page sites, such as Flavors.me (free, 4.5 stars) and About.me, with a floating toolbar that makes it easy to change the background, theme, or arrange elements on the page. The choices are sparse?for a reason, as Re.vu limits things to keep you from getting out of hand with a crazy design. For example, you can't change a single font.

You can use Re.vu's custom backgrounds or upload your own (maximum size is 2MB). Unlike with Flavors and About.me, where the emphasis is on creating a personal statement with a fancy background image, at Re.vu the page is about the data, not the background. Generic better here; the images provided with the Re.vu templates are probably best, unless you've got some serious graphic-artistry chops.

The timeline of your work and education is only imported once. After that, you have to keep it updated separately from LinkedIn. If you have typos on LinkedIn, they'll also appear on Re.vu, so it pays to go to LinkedIn and clean it up first so you only have to make changes once.

Once the data is imported, visit your profile and make edits anyway, because the fun stuff for the page isn't imported, you have to add it. That includes logos or images for each job you've had in the past, which pop-up when a cursor is passed over that section of the timeline. The Infographics tab will let you insert vital stats (put in numbers for anything, like businesses you've started, articles you've written, etc.), as well as graphs showing your job duties, favorite pastimes, interests, and languages. You can also upload portfolios of your work (in PDF or MS Office formats) to show off. These are the extras that make for a more interesting online r?sum??and, hopefully, will lead to a great job interview.

It's too bad your LinkedIn updates are not instantly seen at Re.vu, but again, this might be a wise decision since it can take some tweaking to get the timeline just right. Re.vu provides stats, will generate a QR code graphic to put on business cards, blogs, or even your traditional r?sum?, and will let you promote your new r?sum? page with search engines or via Twitter, Google+, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

It's odd that Re.vu doesn't let you link from your page to your other social networks, but perhaps very smart. Re.vu wants to keep things totally professional. For that reason alone, a Re.vu page is the best place to send prospective employers than any other landing page. That it makes your r?sum? look so good is the other. Re.vu is our Editors' Choice for r?sum?-based personal Web pages.

Take Your Pick: Living Wills Or Living Trusts - The Bustard Blog

Nobody can really tell what the future holds. Because of this fact, a lot of people have taken measures to make sure that things will turn out as smoothly as possible.

If you want to jump right onto the same bandwagon, then you better be equipped with the right knowledge prior to making that decision. Living wills or living trusts can provide you with that much-needed preparation but you certainly need to learn about these legal documents before you could actually take your pick.

Living Wills Vs. Living Trusts

If you want to know which legal document is more appropriate for you, you first need to find out the coverage of living wills or living trusts. Since they?re both legally binding, every adult person should almost certainly know how each could be of assistance to them in the future. In order to properly pick your choice, you have to know their differences.

A living will is a legal document that discloses a person?s wishes concerning health care. Its contents will only be effective once the maker falls into an incapacitated state wherein he or she is no longer capable of conveying his or her decisions.

The directives contained within it usually indicate one?s desires not to receive treatment or be kept alive by means of artificial life support measures.

Once you?re in an incapacitated condition, your family will have to make all the health care decisions for you. Aside from that, they will have to put up with the financial burden of your hospitalization. By restricting medical treatment, a living will could keep a tight rein on hospital expenses that could use up or even totally exhaust all your family?s remaining funds.

The more authentic information about Living Wills you know, the more likely people are to consider you a Living Wills expert. Read on for even more Living Wills facts that you can share.

On the other hand, a living trust ? also known as inter vivos trust ? is a legally binding document that is drawn up for the purpose of controlling ownership to a person?s assets in his or her entire lifetime, and for allocating those properties after death.

The creator or the grantor may also appoint a trustee who will implement the terms indicated in the living trust in case he or she becomes incapacitated or unwilling to perform the duty.

In comparison to a will, the grantor does not necessarily have to pass away for the living trust to take effect. As the name implies, this legal document is effective during the creator?s lifetime.

A living trust however is only recommended for people who own a considerable amount of assets and finances. In other words, the necessity to create one is largely dependent on your circumstances, financially speaking.

If still haven?t decided which type of legal to choose, you might as well pick both for as long as the two are applicable to your needs and circumstances.

The obvious similarity is in the financial aspect. Living wills make it possible for you to save your family from all the trouble of paying for enormous hospital bills, provided that your medical condition appears to be beyond any possibility of recovery. On the other hand, living trusts lay emphasis on the need to properly manage your assets according to your preferences.

On the whole, living wills or living trusts make it possible for you to put things in order while you still can. Also, both legal documents allow you to prepare for the inevitable and the unknown.

A Guide to Basic Etiquette When Using a Chauffeur ... - Toronto Limo

Last updated 1 day 4 hours ago

Whether you are using a wedding limo, prom limousine services, or just getting a ride to the airport, proper etiquette will make the journey more enjoyable for everyone. Make the effort to be polite and personable to get the most out of your limo ride. Before you slide into the vehicle, brush up on your limousine etiquette to enhance your overall experience:

  • Include a Tip
A limo service combines a luxury vehicle with the highest quality customer service. Show your chauffeur your appreciation by including a tip with your ride. A fair tip is generally anywhere between 10% 15%. If you really enjoyed your experience, though, show your gratitude with a larger tip.
  • Use Restraint When Drinking
It is okay to enjoy some of the beverages provided in the limo, just try not to consume too much. Even though the chauffeur handles the driving for you, it is impolite to drink too much during the course of your limo ride. Take it easy when drinking so you and the driver can have an enjoyable evening.
  • Do Not Overfill the Vehicle
Whether you are traveling in a private or a corporate limo, it is important to avoid inviting too many passengers into your car. Overfilling the vehicle makes it more dangerous to drive. Do not put yourself, your fellow passengers, and your driver at risk of a traffic accident. Adhering to passenger suggestions will give you more space inside the limo and decrease your chances of getting into an accident.

Whether you need leisure or corporate limo services, 5 Star Limousine has Toronto?s transportation covered. It is our pleasure to bring you luxury vehicles and the best chauffeurs in the industry. We offer services for weddings, proms, business events, and all of your other transportation needs. For more information, visit us online or call (647) 955-7169.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Nearly identical in most ways to the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4590 ($499.99 list, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 ($399.99 list) adds Wi-Fi support that the WP-4590 lacks, but leaves out support for the PCL and PostScript printer languages that some offices require. Beyond that, it shares the same fast speed and good paper handling that makes both printers comparable to similarly priced lasers, and it offers the same low cost per page that makes them particularly attractive choices for micro and small offices and workgroups. The WP-4533 in particular is attractive enough to make it Editors' Choice.

Despite the $100 lower price for the WP-4533, it's best thought of as sharing the current top of the line spot for WorkForce Pro models. In essence, the WP-4590 is top of the line for offices that need PCL or PostScript in their printers, while the WP-4533 is top of the line for those that don't. Both printers, for example, offer identical MFP features. Both print, scan, and fax, including over a network; they both work as standalone copiers and fax machines; and both can scan to, but not print from, a USB key.

As with the WP-4590 also, the WP-4533 lets you print through the cloud. Connect to the Internet by way of a network, using either an Ethernet or WiFi connection in this case, and you can take advantage of Epson Connect Email Print, which assigns an email address to the printer, then lets you print a document by sending it as an email attachment.

Similarly, you can also print with Google Cloud Print and even print with Apple AirPrint if you have a WiFi access point on your network. (You can't connect directly to the printer with AirPrint). You won't find any mention of these two options in the material that comes with the printer, however. To find out how to use either choice, you have to go to Epson's Web site.

Paper Handling and Setup
The WP-4533's paper handling is better than you'll get with most similarly priced color laser MFPs. The 330 sheet paper capacity, divided into a 250-sheet drawer and 80-sheet multi-purpose tray, should be more than enough for most small offices, and the built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) is a welcome convenience. If you need more capacity, you can even add a second 250-sheet drawer ($99.99 list) for a total of 580 sheets.

For scanning, the WP-4533 offers a 30-page automatic document feeder (ADF) to supplement the letter-size flatbed. The ADF can scan legal-size pages as well as multipage documents, which is typical, but it also goes beyond that, adding the ability to scan in duplex by turning the page over when it scans. The duplexing options lets you copy both single- and double-sided originals to your choice of single- or double-sided copies.

Setup is absolutely standard fare. For my tests, I connected the WP-4533 by its Ethernet port and installed the driver and software on a Windows Vista system. The only potential issue is the size, since the paper handing capabilities require a relative large printer for an inkjet, at 15.1 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD).

Although that makes the printer a little large to comfortably share a desk with, and arguably a little large for most home offices, it's small enough so it should be an easy fit for a micro or small office. Also worth mention is that it weighs only 30.4 pounds, which makes it much lighter and easier to move around than comparable lasers.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533

Speed and Output Quality
On our business applications I timed the printer (using QualityLogic's hardware and software), at an effective 6.0 pages per minute (ppm). Not surprisingly, that makes it essentially tied with the WP-4590, at 5.7 ppm using the Epson driver. (At these speeds, a 0.3 ppm isn't statistically significant.) It's also essentially tied with the Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct, 4.5 stars) and faster than the comparably priced color laser Editors' choice Dell 1355cnw Multifunction Color Printer ($419.99 direct, 4 stars), which managed only 4.5 ppm.

As with the WP-4590, output quality is the only area where the WP-4533 behaves more like a typical inkjet than like a laser. Text quality is at the low end of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, which makes it good enough for most business purposes. Unless you have an unusual need for small fonts, you shouldn't have any complaints about it.

Graphics is absolutely par for an inkjet, which also makes it makes it good enough for any business needs, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on how critical an eye you have, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is at the upper end of the small range where the vast majority of inkjet MFPs fall, making it better than what you'd get with some drugstore prints and a lot better than you'll get from a color laser. For those businesses, like real estate offices, that need to print photos, that can be a welcome plus.

One other strong argument for the WP-4533 is its low cost per page. Based on ink cost and claimed yields for the cartridges, the running cost comes out to 1.6 cents for a monochrome page and 6.8 cents for a color page. That makes the WP-4533, along with WP-4590, one of the least expensive printers in this price range to print with. And that includes lasers as well as inkjets.

As I said about the WP-4590, the WP-4533 is one of the more impressive inkjets we've tested. Its speed, paper handling, and MFP features are all a match for comparably priced?and even more expensive?laser MFPs, and it offers everything a small office needs, including some notable extras like cloud printing. Clearly, if you must have PostScript or PCL, the WP-4590 will be your preferred choice. For the larger number of small offices that don't, however, the WP-4533 offers all the same capabilities plus WiFi at a lower price.

More generally, if you must have laser-quality text, you should also look at the Dell 1355cnw; and if you can benefit from a legal-size flatbed, you should look at the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. However, the low cost per page for the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4533 is enough to make it Editors' Choice also, along with both of those printers. And the more you print, the more you'll appreciate the savings.

Night Shift Might Boost Women's Breast Cancer Risk: Study

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) -- Women who work the night shift more than twice a week might be increasing their risk for breast cancer, Danish researchers find.

Moreover, the risk appears to be cumulative and highest among women who describe themselves as "morning" people rather than "evening" people, the researchers say.

"About 10 to 20 percent of women in modern societies have night shift work," said lead researcher Johnni Hansen. "It might therefore be one of the largest occupational problems related to cancer."

Right now, the reasons for these findings are uncertain.

"Night shift work involves exposure to light at night, which decreases the production of the night hormone melatonin that seems to protect against certain cancers," said Hansen, of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society, in Copenhagen.

In addition, light at night might introduce circadian disruption, where the master clock in the brain becomes desynchronized from local cellular clocks in different body organs, affecting the breast, he said.

"Repeated phase shifting may lead to defects in the regulation of the circadian cell cycle, thus favoring uncontrolled growth," Hansen said.

Also, sleep deprivation after night shift work leads to the suppression of the immune system, which might increase the growth of cancer cells, he added.

This is not the first time this association has been recognized. In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, said that working the night shift is "probably carcinogenic to humans," according to background information in the study.

The new study was published in the May 28 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

To determine the effect of night shift work on the risk for breast cancer, Hansen's team collected data on more than 18,500 women who worked for the Danish Army between 1964 and 1999.

The researchers identified 210 women who had breast cancer and compared them to almost 900 similar women who did not have breast cancer.

All of the women were asked about their working patterns, lifestyles and other factors such as their use of contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, and their sunbathing habits.

In addition, women were asked to classify themselves as "morning" or "evening" people.

In all, 141 women with breast cancer responded to the study questionnaires. In addition, 551 women who did not have breast cancer responded.

Among these women, the risk for breast cancer was increased 40 percent if they worked at night, the researchers found.

But for women who worked nights at least three times a week, and for at least six years, the risk was doubled, the findings showed.

Women who worked the night shift but who described themselves as morning people were at even higher risk of breast cancer. They were almost four times more likely to develop breast cancer as those who didn't work nights, according to the researchers.

In comparison, women who considered themselves evening people were twice as likely to develop breast cancer, they added.

Morning-preferring women who did not work at night had a lower overall risk of breast cancer than evening types, Hansen's team found.

"Since night shift work is unavoidable in modern societies, this type of work should be limited in duration and limited to less than three night shifts per week," Hansen said. "In particular, morning types should limit their night work," he added.

While the study found an association between night shift work and breast cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Men who work at night may also be at risk for prostate cancer, Hansen noted. This evidence comes from three small studies, he said.

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that "it's very hard to single out the causes of breast cancer and whether women on the night shift have a higher risk."

But there appears to be some truth to this, she added.

"Stress increases the risk of breast cancer and affects the body as a whole, and working at night can throw off your circadian rhythm and cause stress," Bernik said.

"This is another finding that breast cancer is caused by a multitude of different environmental and genetic influences, so this is probably a piece of the puzzle," she added.

An expert on environmental factors that affect cancer, Richard Stevens, from the department of community medicine at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, Conn., said that "the evidence is growing rapidly about light at night and, specifically, shift work and breast cancer."

"But, this is the first study about the morning/evening preference," he noted.

"If it's true that light at night increases the risk of disease, then there are very practical implications," Stevens said.

If lighting is really an issue in night work, it is known which wavelengths suppress melatonin the most, and lighting could be adjusted to eliminate those wavelengths, he explained.

There are other things people can do to avoid the effects of light at night on health, he added.

"For example, for health in general, if you wake up during the night, stay in the dark; don't turn on the light. If you turn on the lights it will start suppressing melatonin immediately," Stevens said.

"There is a lot more involved than melatonin, but it's a good marker if your circadian rhythm is being changed," he said.

Studies are ongoing on the risk of night work and prostate cancer, Stevens noted.

The Faster-Than-Light Telegraph That Wasn't

Web Exclusives | More Science

In 1981 physicist Nick Herbert leveraged strange features of quantum mechanics to design a superluminal communication system. The quest to uncover its subtle flaw led to a profound new understanding of the quantum world

Herbert's FLASH system?the acronym stood for "first laser-amplified superluminal hookup"?employed a source that emitted pairs of photons in opposite directions. The scheme focused on photons' polarization?that is, the directions along which their associated electric fields oscillated. The photons could be plane-polarized, with the electric fields oscillating either horizontally (H) or vertically (V). Or the photons could be circularly polarized, with the electric fields tracing out helical patterns in either a right-handed (R) or left-handed (L) orientation.

Physicists had long known that the two flavors of polarization?plane or circular?were intimately related. Plane-polarized light could be used to create circularly polarized light, and vice versa. For example, a beam of H-polarized light consisted of equal parts R- and L-polarized light, in a particular combination, just as a beam of R-polarized light could be broken down into equal parts H and V. Likewise for individual photons: a photon in state R, for example, could be represented as a special combination of states H and V. If one prepared a photon in state R but chose to measure plane rather than circular polarization, one would have an equal probability of finding H or V: a single-particle version of Schr?dinger?s cat.

In Herbert's imagined set-up, one physicist, Alice ("Detector A" in the illustration), could choose to measure either plane or circular polarization of the photon headed her way [1]. If she chose to measure plane polarization, she would measure H and V outcomes with equal probability. If she chose to measure circular polarization, she would find R and L outcomes with equal probability.

In addition, Alice knows that because of the nature of the source of photons, each photon she measures has an entangled twin moving toward her partner, Bob. Quantum entanglement means that the two photons behave like two sides of a coin: if one is measured to be in state R, then the other must be in state L; or if one is measured in state H, the other must be in state V. The kicker, according to Bell's theorem, is that Alice's choice of which type of polarization to measure (plane or circular) should instantly affect the other photon, streaming toward Bob [2]. If she chose to measure plane polarization and happened to get the result H, then the entangled photon heading toward Bob would enter the state V instantaneously. If she had chosen instead to measure circular polarization and found the result R, then the entangled photon instantly would have entered the state L.

Next came Herbert's special twist. Before the second photon made its way to Bob's detectors, it entered a laser gain tube [3]. Lasers had been around for 20 years by that time, and as the leading textbooks routinely touted, the output from a laser had the same polarization as the input signal. That suggested that the laser should release a burst of photons in the complementary state to whatever Alice had found at her side. Bob could then split the beam [4], sending half toward a detector to measure plane polarization [5] and half toward a detector to measure circular polarization [6].

If Alice chose to measure circular polarization and happened to find L, then the entangled photon heading toward Bob would instantly go into the state R prior to entering the laser gain tube. Out of the laser would burst a stream of R photons heading toward Bob. He could then send half the beam toward a detector to measure plane polarization and half toward a detector to measure circular polarization. In this case, Herbert concluded, Bob would find half the photons in state R, none in state L, and a quarter each in states H and V. In an instant, Bob would know that Alice had chosen to measure circular polarization. Alice's choice?plane or circular polarization?would function like the dots and dashes of Morse code. She could signal Bob simply by alternating her choice of what type of polarization to measure. Bob could decode each bit of Alice?s code faster than light could have traveled between them.

As GianCarlo Ghirardi, Tullio Weber, Wojciech Zurek, Bill Wootters and Dennis Dieks each clarified, Herbert?s device would not actually allow superluminal signaling. A photon in state R, for example, would exist as a combination of equal parts H and V. Each of those underlying states would be amplified by the laser. Hence the output would be a superposition of two states: one in which all the photons were in state H, and the other in which all the photons were in state V, each with a probability of 50 percent. Bob would never find half in H and half in V at the same time, just as physicists would never find Schr?dinger's cat to be both half-dead and half-alive upon opening the box. Thus, Bob would receive only noise no matter what setting Alice had chosen on her end. Moment by moment, Bob's detectors would flash H with R or V with L or H with L and so on, in random combinations. He would never find H and V with R, and hence he would have no way to determine what Alice had been trying to tell him. Quantum entanglement and relativity could coexist after all.

This discovery became known as the "no-cloning theorem": a powerful statement about the ultimate foundations of quantum theory. An arbitrary or unknown quantum state cannot be copied without disturbing the original state. No one had ever recognized that fundamental feature of quantum theory before the cat-and-mouse game had unfolded between Nick Herbert's thought experiment and his talented detractors. The fact that quantum theory sets an ultimate limit on the ability of anyone?including a potential eavesdropper?to seize individual quantum particles and make copies of them soon became the bedrock for quantum encryption, and today is at the heart of the flourishing field of quantum information science.

FILE - In this March 23, 2012 file photo, Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone, left, looks on as Pope Benedict XVI talks to journalists during a press conference aboard the flight to Silao, Mexico. An already sordid scandal over leaked Vatican documents took a Hollywood-like turn Saturday, May 26, 2012 with confirmation that the pope's own butler had been arrested after documents he had no business having were found in his Vatican City apartment. The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time when it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven. Bertone, 77, has been blamed for a series of gaffes and management problems that have plagued Benedict's papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials. (AP Photo/Gregorio Borgia, File)

FILE - In this Monday, April 21, 2008 file photo, Pope Benedict XVI, left, arrives at the Italian air force 31st Squadron base in Ciampino, 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of Rome, on his way back from a six-day trip to the U.S. including the U.N. and Ground Zero in New York. The Vatican has confirmed Saturday, May 26, 2012, that the pope's butler Paolo Gabriele, at right carrying bags, was arrested in an embarrassing leaks scandal. Spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said Paolo Gabriele, a layman, was arrested in his home inside Vatican City with secret documents in his possession. Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have pointed to power struggles and accusations of corruption touching senior Vatican cardinals.(AP Photo/Domenico Stinellis)

This file photo taken Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, shows the building, left, which hosts the Vatican bank, formerly known as the Institute for Religious Operas, I.O.R., inside the Vatican. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, head of the I.O.R. was ousted after a no-confidence vote of the I.O.R. governing body on Thursday, May 24, 2012. The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time during which it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven. Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See's efforts to show more transparency in its financial operations. But perhaps most critically, the leaks have seemed aimed at one main goal: to discredit Pope Benedict XVI's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state. (AP Photo/Domenico Stinellis)

(AP) ? One of the Vatican's biggest scandals in decades widened Monday with the pope's butler ? arrested for allegedly having confidential documents in his home ? agreeing to cooperate with investigators, his lawyer said Monday.

Paolo Gabriele's pledge to cooperate with Vatican magistrates raises the specter that high-ranking prelates may soon be named in the investigation into leaks of confidential Vatican correspondence that have shed a light on power struggles and intrigue inside the highest levels of the Catholic Church.

Italian media reported Monday that a cardinal is suspected of playing a major role in the "Vatileaks" scandal. However, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, denied the reports. He said many Vatican officials were being questioned in the investigation but insisted "there is no cardinal under suspicion."

He also dismissed as "pure fantasy" a rash of other unsourced reports about the investigation in the Italian media, which have been on a frenzy ever since reports of Gabriele's detention emerged Friday.

Gabriele, the pope's personal butler since 2006, was arrested Wednesday evening after documents he had no business having in his possession were found inside his Vatican City apartment. He remains in custody in a Vatican detention facility, accused of theft, and has met with his wife and lawyers.

Gabriele's lawyer Carlo Fusco said his client would "respond to all the questions and will collaborate with investigators to ascertain the truth."

The 46-year-old father of three was always considered extremely loyal to Benedict and his predecessor, John Paul II, for whom he briefly served. Vatican insiders said they were baffled by his alleged involvement in the scandal. Fusco reported Monday that Gabriele was "very serene and calm."

Gabriele's arrest gave the already sordid scandal of the leaks an unfathomable Hollywood twist. So far, he remains the only one who has been arrested, but Lombardi stressed that the investigation was continuing.

The Vatileaks scandal broke in January when Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi broadcast letters from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

The scandal widened over the following months with documents leaked to Italian journalists that laid bare clear power struggles inside the Vatican over its efforts to show greater financial transparency.

The Vatican probe is actually working on two separate tracks: Vatican magistrates are pursuing the criminal investigation, and Gabriele was arrested as part of that. Separately, Pope Benedict XVI has appointed three cardinals to form an investigative commission to look beyond the narrow criminal scope of the leaks.

Those cardinals have the authority to interview broadly across the Vatican bureaucracy, Lombardi said, and can both share information with Vatican prosecutors and receive information from them.

They report directly to the pope, whom Lombardi said, was being kept informed of the investigation.

"He's aware of the delicate situation that the Roman curia is going through, but he's keeping up his serenity and great faith and moral superiority," Lombardi said.

Benedict has not commented directly on the scandal.

Nuzzi, the author of "Vatican SpA," a 2009 volume laying out shady dealings of the Vatican bank based on leaked documents, last weekend published "His Holiness," which presented a trove of other documents including personal correspondence to and from the pope and his secretary, many of them painting Benedict's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, in a negative light.

Nuzzi says he was offered the documents by multiple Vatican sources and insisted he didn't pay a cent to any of them.

Using Resell Rights Products For Your Own Marketing Campaigns ...

From the time the Internet became a means of communication, people have been using it as a way to generate income. Currently, a huge number of genuine business opportunities are availing so that people have the potential to earn either a part-time or full-time income. The key is to discover the one that works for you, given that all of us are individuals with our own talents and capabilities. A fairly easy business model that works very well for a lot of people is one that employs private label resell rights. This wide open opportunity is available for anybody who needs extra cash, from the stay-at-home mommy to the retiree.

A product such as an ebook or program is created and offered with the right to resell it. Though it?s true that it?s a wise idea to have your own product, the product creation process can take a very long time so a lot of people choose to work with resell rights product instead. Despite the fact that this may sound like the opportunity of a lifetime and works nicely for a lot of people, other individuals are not successful with it. Before you venture out to purchase any resell rights ebooks or application, you should understand the advantages and disadvantages of using resell rights products. It?s fairly easy to find some inexpensive products but these may not be that great of an offer since they may be terribly done and so are not going to sell well.

People who profit with a resell rights product have the knowledge to transform it into a new product of their own and are effective in marketing. If you leave the product unmodified, then you?re actually competing with all the other people who also acquired that particular resell rights product. In the occasions where you are allowed to alter the product, you need to change it enough to make it different from the others. Doing this will enable you to very quickly end up being the author of your very own book. By slightly changing the content along with adding a new book cover and sales page, your product will no longer be like the original one. After you?ve done this one time and experienced success with sales, you can do this again many times with even more resell rights products.

You might not be a competent writer, but with resell rights, the work is already done, and all you should do, is alter it enough to put your own personality into it. Depending on how much cash you had to pay for the resell rights to the product, you know the amount of money you need to break even, and begin making a profit. Because the product now belongs to you, you can set the selling price. Just how much you make will vary depending on how much work and testing you put into the selling of the product.

After you have modified your sales page and determined the best price to make sales, you can begin working on your next product. This may not be the best business for you, but on the other hand, it could be.

With the beginning with the Internet and how simple it?s got created communication, made using the idea as being an income stream. Presently, numerous legitimate business opportunities tend to be availing in order that men and women have the possibility for you to earn sometimes a part-time or even full-time income.

Social Studies Teacher Tells Student He Can Be Arrested for Slandering President Obama

classroomHunter Rogers was sitting in his high school social studies class when his teacher began talking about Mitt Romney being a bully when he was in high school. Even though that story has been discredited, the teacher wanted to engage the students in a dialogue about it. Hunter asked if Barack Obama had ever bullied anyone (by his own admission, the president once pushed a girl).

The teacher responded that she didn?t know, and somehow ended up on a tirade about how wrong it is to slander the president by asking him the same questions you might ask Mitt Romney. She went so far as to tell Hunter and his classmates that you can be arrested for slandering the president.

Hunter got the whole exchange on tape.

The North Carolina teen had asked a classmate to record the exchange so that he could prove to his parents that this particular teacher was not teaching, but bullying kids to adopt her own political point of view. This was not a teaching moment. She told the students that they could be arrested for openly disagreeing with the president. Last I checked, this America, not Soviet Russia, and the First Amendment contains an explicit protection of free speech.

This teacher is either lying to her students, or if she actually believes what she said, too incompetent to be a teacher. The school has since suspended her with pay. No word on whether she will be reinstated, educated further on the subject she is supposed to be teaching, or if she?ll remain on the payroll indefinitely without even pretending to work.

Teachers that engage students in political discussions need to be open to letting kids explore their own ideologies and develop their own beliefs. They should not be biased, but factual. The kids they are teaching are students, not subjects to be verbally beaten into political submission.

Talking over kids trying to raise valid questions about candidates teaches them that political discourse is really a monologue. America is a place where everyone is free to voice his or her own opinion, regardless of who agrees or disagrees with it. You?d think a social studies teacher would know that.

By: Nil Sparrow

Today as due to globalization, businesses - either large or small, operate all around the world but businessmen believe that for success of any business, it should be operated in large metro cities rather than in a small town. As in, for small town, you may find it difficult to obtain new customers. So to overcome this problem people have come up with outsourcing the business mail and telephone to a Mail Forwarding company, such companies are also known as a virtual office where company outsources certain office work such as mail handling and telephone answering, which are mainly related to clients or customers. As in virtual offices are mainly located at very well known addresses which result into creation of good impression of organization in eyes of their clients as company has been established in a prestigious address. Other than that, business also has professional call handling capabilities.

Individuals who are having businesses related to travelling whole day have it really hard when it comes to mailing; they often come home with their work burden and still have spare time to check out important mails from among many. In addition to it, they even have to reply to that mails which ultimately ends up in making them sick of doing work - which ultimately harms the business. So to overcome this problem, mail forwarding service is good option for businesses. It helps them to monitor the mail, filter out junk mail and gives them total control of the process and keeps them at peace that their important mail is somewhere safe.

Mail forwarding services are also a way to save money that would otherwise be spent on shipping charges. Mail forwarding is used to keep a track of your mail and separate the important mail from rest all. Using mail forwarding services can save a significant amount of time, money, and human resources which otherwise is not possible. In addition, mail forwarding services can save the long distance and international calls from all business locations by paying only a flat rate for their services every month.

Mail forwarding services are useful as the business don?t need to hire the extra number of employees for attending telephones and mails. So the businesses have low cost related to selection and hiring. As work is outsourced there is no need for providing training to employees which results into huge amount of saving for business. If businesses have their own office, it requires very well designed office and equipments with latest technology due to which outsourcing mail forwarding service will surely avoid expenses!

3 young kids abandoned in shed near vacant house

Three small children were found abandoned in a shed in Portland, Ore., on Thursday and were taken into protective custody as police try to identify them and find their parents. KGW-TV's Reggie Aqui reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com

Three small children were found abandoned in a shed in Portland, Ore., on Thursday and?were taken into protective custody as police try to identify them and find their parents.

The oldest of the kids, a boy, is approximately?3 years old. A girl, about 2, and an infant girl, believed to be somewhere between 8 and 15 months, were found with the boy Thursday morning, authorities said.

Around 9:30 a.m., a man called 911 to report hearing children's voices from a shed behind his house in Southeast Portland.

The shed was on the property of a vacant residence, police said in a statement.

Officers said there were homeless people "on the premises" who told them the children were abandoned there the night before by a woman they believed to be their mother.

It's not known, however,?if the children are siblings. The Department of Human Services took them into protective custody and gave them medical evaluations.

A resident on the street where the kids the kids were discovered said she had noticed strangers walking across from her home on Thursday morning, where the empty shed is.

"We have a real homeless problem in our neighborhood, so I keep an eye across the street," Judy Baxter, a homeowner on Southeast Rhine Street, told?oregonlive.com.

She said she saw a man and a woman walk into the backyard of a vacant house on Thursday morning, so she called the property owner to suggest he report them. Soon after, police arrived.

Baxter told oregonlive.com that officials led the kids out of the shed through pouring rain; the toddlers held the hands of state welfare workers, while a police officer carried the infant out.

The kids were wearing coats and had backpacks, she said. Authorities who responded to the scene gave them stuffed animals, she told oregonlive.com.

Jennifer Estus, who lives next to the vacant property, told oregonlive.com that homeless people often sleep in the driveway behind the home.

Police said the two older children weigh 28 pounds, and the infant is 15 pounds. All three have olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes.

A call to the Portland police on Thursday from msnbc.com was not immediately returned.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the DHS Child Abuse Hotline at 503-731-3100.

Improved Diagnostics For Sleeping Sickness - Kiefit.com

Lies Van Nieuwenhove, researcher at the Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine, has produced proteins imitating typical parts of the sleeping sickness parasite. They can be used in more efficient diagnostic tests, without the need for culturing dangerous parasites. Each year many thousands of Africans contract sleeping sickness. The cause is a unicellular parasite, a trypanosome, which is transmitted by the bite of tsetse flies. First the parasite multiplies in blood and lymph, while evading the human immune system. It then lodges in organs like heart and kidneys and finally in the brain...

People can be jailed for public drinking or even making rude gestures in the United Arab Emirates, making somebody with Maradona's history of drug and alcohol abuse and knack for courting controversy an odd choice for a coach.

"He does come with a checkered history and a very well publicized short fuse," said Carlo Nohra, who was chief executive of the UAE Pro League before taking the same job at the Al Ain club. "Of course, the liability was that the media value would soon wear out and the fuse would blow for whatever reason. Then, he would leave and UAE football would be then back in the news for all the wrong reasons."

Halfway through Maradona's two-year deal, the gamble appears to have paid off for Al Wasl.

The man who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup and is regarded among the greatest players ever is still in the desert, having avoided any scandal.

Maradona has tested his club's patience, though, with verbal attacks on its owners, a spat with a rival coach and an incident in which he kicked an Al Wasl fan. But he has been a huge draw with fans across the Gulf and has almost single-handedly put Al Wasl on the international football map.

"Sometimes the crowd comes only to see Maradona, not Al Wasl," said Cosmin Olaroiu, the coach at champion Al Ain who has a not-so-friendly rivalry with the 51-year-old Argentine. "Everyone from around the world, they look here because there is some news about him."

Maradona didn't look much like a football savior when he arrived for negotiations with Al Wasl.

Appearing unshaven, overweight and dressed like a tourist, Maradona looked the part of an unemployed coach looking for a fresh start. His skill on the field hadn't translated into coaching - and he was fired by Argentina after a 4-0 World Cup quarterfinal loss to Germany.

But the crowds that greeted him on his first appearance at Al Wasl were oblivious to any negatives. They mobbed him and chanted his name as he watched the team practice. He blew them kisses. When he ventured out to a Dubai mall to buy one of his two daughters a birthday gift, the crowds grew so big that security had to hustle him into a Prada store for his safety.

It didn't take long for Maradona's bluster and bravado to return, even as he criticized the league's leading administrators.

"Today, I feel the same challenge, the same way as I felt when I was coaching the national team," Maradona said, flashing a mischievous smile. "If we work hard with a good team, we can make history."

Maradona got his first win in his second match, but the victory was overshadowed by his fiery antics. He was forced to apologize after kicking the hand of a fan who had repeatedly interfered as he was posing for a photo in front of a banner from his grandson, Benjamin.

And after a particularly tough loss to Al Ain, Maradona accused Olaroiu of being rude and disrespectful for the way he celebrated a goal. The Romanian coach shot back that Maradona didn't have a "clear mind." Maradona was later fined by the league, but continued to take shots at Olaroiu - even refusing to shake hands when the teams met again.

"The Al Ain coach doesn't seem to have any football sense. It was obvious when he celebrated the team's goal. It was provocative," Maradona said. "It's a shame what he did and I will not forget."

At another match, Maradona charged into the stands to confront Al Shabab fans who were taunting his partner, Veronica Ojeda, and the wives of several players. He had to be restrained by security staff and later described the fans as "cowards" for heckling the women.

The emotional outburst only further endeared him with Al Wasl fans, who have been captivated by a man who brought a sense of excitement to a club that hadn't won anything in four years.

Wearing a diamond stud in each ear and the black and yellow Al Wasl polo shirt and baggy shorts, Maradona has been impossible to miss as he stalked the sidelines during the season.

"Maradona is good for Al Wasl and Al Wasl is good for Maradona," said Safwan Abdulrahman, a 24-year-old fan whose top-to-toe Al Wasl outfit included a yellow wig, as he pointed to one of the sold-out crowds during the season. "All those people, most of them are here for Maradona."

Fans have found plenty of extravagant ways to reward their famous coach: One gave him a Ferrari; another paid for him to attend a Manchester City match in a private jet.

And the celebrity status also has helped Maradona dodge any blame for the team finishing eighth in a 12-team league.

"I'm not a magician," Maradona said, shrugging off a recent loss with another stab at the club's lack of player depth.

Off the pitch, Maradona has avoided the public eye and spends much of his time holed up at his villa - a sharp contrast to a man who battled a cocaine habit even before he retired in 1997 and once fired an air gun at reporters outside his home and was threatened with jail.

He seems concerned only with football, passing up the chance to make millions from guest appearances and endorsements, although the club acknowledges his presence has led to a sharp increase in attendance and the signing of two new major sponsors.

He also seems more the family man than ever, especially since the death of his mother in November. He returned from the funeral distraught, breaking down after one victory. He talks incessantly about his grandchildren and has his grandson's name Benjamin tattooed on his right arm. He wears two watches - one showing British time so he only has to glance to know what time it is where his daughter and grandson live.

His talk of spending more time with his grandchildren has fueled speculation that Maradona would break his contract, a prospect that seemed increasingly likely in recent weeks as he ratcheted up complaints about the club's lack of talent and broken promises over new players.

"I will be ready to leave if I cannot get the players I want," he demanded last month. "If I can't compete, there is no reason to continue. ... Maybe after 31 years of being in this industry, maybe it's time to do something else and spend more time with my grandson."

But just when it seemed Maradona was packing his bags, he reversed course. He emerged this month from a meeting with management insisting he will honor his contract with only a game left in the season.

For now, the Maradona show will be back for another season.

Cancer may require simpler genetic mutations than previously thought

ScienceDaily (May 25, 2012) ? Chromosomal deletions in DNA often involve just one of two gene copies inherited from either parent. But scientists haven't known how a deletion in one gene from one parent, called a "hemizygous" deletion, can contribute to cancer.

A research team led by Stephen Elledge, a professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, and his post-doctoral fellow Nicole Solimini, has now provided an answer. The most common hemizygous deletions in cancer, their research shows, involve a variety of tumor suppressing genes called STOP genes (suppressors of tumorigenesis and proliferation) that scatter randomly throughout the genome, but that sometimes cluster in the same place on a chromosome. And these clusters, said Elledge, who is also a professor of medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, tend to be deleted as a group. "Eliminating the cluster gives a bigger bang for the deletion buck," he said.

This finding is especially interesting in light of the two-hit model of cancer formation, which holds that both copies of a recessive gene need to be inactivated to trigger a biological effect. Thus the loss of a single tumor suppressor copy should have little or no influence on tumor cell proliferation because the remaining copy located on the other chromosome is there to pick up the slack.

Elledge's research points to a different hypothesis, namely that STOP genes in a hemizygous deletion aren't recessive but are instead haploinsufficient, meaning that they depend on two copies to function normally. "If a tumor suppressor is haploinsufficient, then a single gene copy lacks the potency needed to fully restrain tumorigenesis," Elledge explained, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. "So by removing clusters of haploinsufficient genes all at once, the cancer cell immediately propels its growth forward without having to wait for the other copies to also be lost."

Angelika Amon, a professor of biology at the Massachusetts of Technology, said she's surprised by the findings. "We've known from a lot of human syndromes that haploinsufficiency is widespread in the development of complex multicellular organisms," she said. "But these data show it's also critical for individual cells and cell proliferation."

The results also offer a different take on the two-hit model in carcinogenesis, Amon said. Being remarkably unstable, cancer cells can delete gene copies at every turn of the corner. If the loss of a single tumor suppressor copy provides no survival advantage for the tumor, then the tumor has no incentive to retain the cell with that deletion. But if the loss of that copy boosts proliferation, then the probability of a second hit later is greatly increased. "So haploinsufficiency is a way for the cancer cell to dramatically accelerate the acquisition of growth beneficial mutations," Amon said.

In other words, all it takes is a 50 percent reduction in gene activity for a cancer cell to grow. "That tells us it's a lot easier to get cancer than we might have hoped," Amon said.

According to Elledge, the number of hemizygotic deletions averages roughly six per tumor, with some tumors -- breast and pancreatic, for instance -- averaging up to ten. Each deletion involves 25 to 40 genes, many of them STOP genes, but also a few GO genes (growth enhancers and oncogenes) that enhance proliferation. That the STOP genes substantially outnumber their GO counterparts is important, Elledge explained, because it means cancer cells can tilt scales toward proliferation without also compromising it at the same time.

"The data reveal a lot of haploinsufficient players that have small effects individually, but large effects in combination," Elledge said. "Unfortunately, it's not easy to see how to take advantage of that chemotherapeutically."

What's important about the results, he emphasized, is that they open up new views on how tumors evolve. Moreso, they underscore the importance of proliferation as a fundamental feature of tumor growth, he added.

The challenge now, Elledge said, will be to find out which of the genes in a recurring deletion are haploinsufficient. "At the moment, we estimate roughly 25 percent," he said. "So these findings could also have important ramifications for other human diseases in addition to cancer."
