(AP) ? Unaware the FBI has her under surveillance, Russian spy Anna Chapman buys leggings and tries on hats at a Macy's department store. A few months later, cameras watch her in a New York coffee shop where she meets with someone she thinks is her Russian handler. It is really an undercover FBI agent.

Tapes, documents and photos released Monday describe and sometimes show how Chapman, now a celebrity back in Russia, and other members of a ring of sleeper spies passed instructions, information and cash. The ring was shut down in June 2010 after a decade-long counterintelligence probe that led to the biggest spy swap since the Cold War.

The FBI released the material to The Associated Press in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The investigation was code-named "Ghost Stories," the release of documents on Halloween a coincidence.

While the deep-cover agents did not steal any secrets, an FBI counterintelligence official told the AP they were making progress.

They "were getting very close to penetrating U.S. policymaking circles" through a friend of a U.S. Cabinet official, said C. Frank Figliuzzi, FBI assistant director for counterintelligence.

He did not name names, but Russian spy Cynthia Murphy of Montclair, New Jersey, provided financial planning for venture capitalist Alan Patricof, a political fundraiser with close ties to Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The linchpin in cracking the case, apparently, was Col. Alexander Poteyev, a highly placed U.S. mole in Russian foreign intelligence, who betrayed the spy ring even as he ran it.

He abruptly fled Moscow just days before the FBI rolled up the operation. Poteyev's role emerged when a Russian military court convicted him in absentia for high treason and desertion.

The materials released Monday show Chapman and the other members of Moscow's 11-member ring of sleeper spies ? deep-cover agents assigned to blend into American society ? shopping in New York City, sightseeing, hanging around coffee shops or apparently just out for a stroll. While she shops at one department store, a Russian diplomat waits outside.

The FBI says seemingly mundane pursuits often served as cover for the exchange of encrypted messages or the transfer of cash, all with the long-range goal of penetrating the highest levels of U.S. policymaking.

What appears to be a family photo of one spy, Donald Heathfield of Cambridge, Massachusetts, shows him graduating from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2000. The school revoked the degree a month after the FBI rolled up the spy ring.

Other spies are seen in video and photos meeting at various locations in New York.

Called "illegals" because they took civilian jobs instead of operating with diplomatic immunity inside Russian embassies and military missions, the spies settled into quiet lives in middle-class neighborhoods and set about trying to network their way into the worlds of finance, technology and government.

The operation's codename, Ghost Stories, stems from a number of the spies using a technique known among counter-intelligence investigators as "dead doubles" ? taking the identities of people who have died. Tracey Lee Ann Foley, Michael Zottoli, Donald Heathfield and Patricia Mills all used the technique, Figliuzzi said.

The U.S. traded the 10 "Ghost Stories" spies arrested by federal agents for four Russians imprisoned for spying for the West at a remote corner of a Vienna airport on July 9 in a scene reminiscent of the carefully choreographed exchange of spies at Berlin's Glienicke Bridge during the Cold War.

While freed Soviet spies typically have kept a low profile after their return to Moscow, Chapman became a model, corporate spokeswoman and television personality. Heathfield, whose real name is Andrey Bezrukov, lists himself as an adviser to the president of a major Russian oil company on his LinkedIn account.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev awarded the 10 freed spies Russia's highest honors at a Kremlin ceremony.

The case was brought to a swift conclusion before it could complicate U.S. President Obama's campaign to "reset" American relations with the Kremlin, strained by years of tensions over U.S. foreign policy and the 2008 Russian-Georgian war. All 10 of the captured spies were charged with failing to register as foreign agents.

An 11th suspect, Christopher Metsos, who claimed to be a Canadian citizen and was accused of delivering money and equipment to the sleeper agents, vanished after a court in Cyprus freed him on bail. The FBI released surveillance photos of Metsos on Monday.

Figliuzzi said Metsos traveled into the U.S. solely for the purpose of providing the other illegals with money. Security measures after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks meant he could no longer risk carrying large amounts of cash, prompting the Russians to send officials already in the U.S. to meet with the illegals and pay them.

That could have made them more vulnerable to discovery.

He said Chapman and another illegal, Mikhail Semenko, who worked in a D.C.-area travel agency, represented a "new breed" of illegals operating in the U.S. under their own names.

Chapman and Semenko "were very tech savvy, very intellectual and bright," he said, adding that Semenko is fluent in five languages including Chinese.

Both of the new-breed operatives used state-of-the-art wireless computer communications, but the others fell back on techniques that have been used for centuries. With the two different approaches, "the Russians were experimenting," said Figliuzzi.

The FBI official said that Chapman's ring was the largest network of illegals ever seen in the U.S. By working on the case for so long, he said, the FBI penetrated the ring's communications network to the point where FBI officials were playing the part of Russian handlers. "So in a sense we began to own their communications and we became the Russians," Figliuzzi said.

But former Soviet intelligence officials now living in the West scratched their heads over what Russia hoped to gain from its ring.

"In my view this whole operation was a waste of human resources, money and just put Russia in a ridiculous situation," said Oleg Kalugin, a former KGB major general who spied against the U.S. during the Soviet era, in an interview earlier this year. He now lives near Washington.

Alexander Vassiliev, a former KGB officer and journalist who has written extensively about Soviet spying in America, said the illegals were supposed to act as talent spotters and scouts, identifying Americans in positions of power who might be recruited to spill secrets for financial reasons or through blackmail.

Spies with the protection of diplomatic credentials would handle the more delicate task of recruiting and handling the agents.

Moscow's ultimate aim, Vassiliev said, was probably to cultivate a source who could provide day-by-day intelligence on what the president's inner circle was thinking and planning in response to the latest international crisis. But he said there was no evidence the Kremlin made any progress toward that goal.

"How are you going to recruit someone like that, on what basis? That's quite a successful person. Why should he spy for the Russians? I can't see any reason, said Vassiliev, who now lives in London.

Perry Plays Nice

OK: So Perry's new team of vicious junkyard dogs will go after Cain, right? (Please, let?s have some fighting here, because we're all bored!) No, they're not going to go after Cain either. That's not going to win hearts back. To replace Cain, Perry will have to do two things: Let voters come to the conclusion Cain is wonderful but not ready to be president, and rebuild Perry as the alternative once voters are ready for a second look at him.

Halloween doesn't have to be gorge-fest to be fun (AP)

CHICAGO ? Offer apples to trick-or-treaters and risk having your house get egged ? maybe even by your own kids.

But dentists and dietitians say you can still make Halloween reasonably healthy for little devils and witches without resorting to dracul-onian tactics, like no candy.

"This is such a big adventure for them ? let them have it, obviously with some caveats," said Dr. Rhea Haugseth, a dentist in Marietta, Ga., who's president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry

There are tricks for keeping Halloween fun without risking cavities and extra pounds, like handing out dark chocolate instead of chewy candies or even bribing kids with a toy in exchange for the Halloween loot. Some studies have suggested dark chocolate is good for the heart, and chewy candies stick to the teeth.

Just don't go overboard on restrictions, says Cole Robbins, a Chicago 12-year-old and Halloween veteran.

"Halloween is the one day of the year where we kids just kind of break out and overload on candy," he said.

To help prevent that kind of gorging, try to give children a healthy, filling meal before trick-or-treating, says Bethany Thayer, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association who works at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

Procrastinators, take heart. Thayer also recommends waiting until Halloween day before buying candy, so no one is tempted to indulge beforehand.

"I know people who have to go back to the store because they've completely gone through their candy" before Halloween, she said.

Haugseth suggests avoiding cavity-promoting treats like caramels that stick to the teeth, or lollipops that bathe teeth in a long sugary bath.

Also, having kids brush their teeth before trick-or-treating helps reduce plaque and bacteria, which interact with sugar to produce tooth-decaying acid, Haugseth said. Kids should also brush right after eating candy, she said.

Ronni Litz Julien, a Miami nutritionist whose patients include overweight and obese kids, says another trick for parents is to ask kids not to dip into their loot bags until they bring it all home. That's for safety, so parents can toss any suspicious-looking candy, but it also can prevent an "eating frenzy."

She suggests parents help sort through the loot, have kids select their 10 favorite pieces, and give the rest away. Offer the choice of eating all 10 pieces at once, or over 10 days. That gives them a sense of control, without feeling shortchanged, she said.

"You can't deprive them. It's Halloween, for God's sake," she said.

President Barack Obama joked this week on "The Tonight Show" that he'd warned his health-promoting wife that the White House would get egged if she gave trick-or-treaters fresh fruit and raisins instead of candy. Last year, the Obamas handed out treats that included White House M&Ms; no word on their plans for this year.

Dr. Janet Silverstein, a Gainesville, Fla. pediatrician and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' nutrition committee, says she doesn't give out candy, offering fruit or pencils instead; so far her house is unscathed.

When her own children were young, Silverstein would buy their candy for a nickel a piece. She recommends that to her patients' parents, too ? though not necessarily her other solution ? she used to eat her kids' candy.

In some places, kids willing to give up their candy can make more than a nickel. About 1,500 dentists across the country have agreed this year to participate in a Halloween candy buyback organized by Operation Gratitude. The California-based group periodically sends care packages to U.S. troops overseas. Some dentists pay kids $1 per pound of Halloween candy; last year, the program brought in 250,000 pounds of candy, said Carolyn Blashek, founder of the Van Nuys, Calif.-based group.

Blashek said troops overseas appreciate it as a token of gratitude, and Halloween candy brings back lots of fond childhood memories. Some have given their candy to Afghan children, she noted. Entering your ZIP code on the group's website, http://bit.ly/F1iSy will identify participating dentists.

Parents who plan to encourage giving up candy should be sure not to take it right away, says Brian Wansink, a Cornell University food behavior scientist and author of "Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think."

That's because of a psychology principle called "the endowment effect." It refers to kids feeling a sense of ownership and putting a high value on candy they haul in.

If you let them eat several pieces first, that feeling can fade and they won't even feel hungry anymore. That's the time to offer a trade, Wansink said.

He's tried that trick with his own three daughters, aged 2, 4, and 6, and says "it works like a charm." His girls eagerly give up the rest of their Halloween candy in exchange for a new trinket or other toy that won't rot their teeth, he said.

Young kids aren't really aware of how much they brought home, and when "they sort of count their booty, that's probably the age where kids shouldn't be trick or treating anymore," he said.

Costly Repairs

Cheaper Car Insurance carriers pay attention to the kind of car a pharmaceutical rep travels in. Pictures of the Droid 4 leak out (Digital Trends)

Droid 4 leaked imageIs there anything more fun than seeing a picture of a yet unannounced cell phone? We don?t think so, which is why we are so excited about the freshly leaked picture of what is being called the Droid 4. Droid-Life not only was able to get a few pictures, but also some presumed specs, which we will of course take with a grain of salt.

The Droid 4 has gone through what looks to be a complete makeover, and it will not look like its older siblings. First you will see that the corners of the device are missing, much like the Photon or more recently the Droid RAZR. The famous Droid ?chin? has also been removed, which is a design choice we can fully support. This will be the first Droid to have a screen the same size as the keyboard underneath. Like the Droid 3 the Droid 4 will have a full five row QWERTY keyboard, and it looks pretty great in the picture.

The big rumor with this phone is if it will be an 4G LTE device. That was one of our biggest issues with the Droid 3, so we sure hope that Motorola has upgraded the antenna in this Droid. We would like to think that whenever the next Droid phone is released that it will have LTE.

With that being said we have to wonder when is this phone going to come to market. The device in the pictures does not look like an early prototype, it looks like it is ready for production. We can see that there is already some Verizon bloatwear on the device, and there is even a tutorial sticker on the screen. The Droid 3 was launched in July, and it is a little hard to imagine Motorola releasing the Droid 4 so close to the last generation. That being said why would it wait to release what looks to be an amazing phone?

Facebook likes Sweden for first Europe server site (Reuters)

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) ? Social networking site Facebook is to build its first data center outside the United States in the northern Swedish town of Lulea, awarding an initial construction contract of $121 million, the companies said on Thursday.

The data center, set to be the largest of its kind in Europe, will take advantage of the climate in Lulea, among the coldest in Sweden, to cool tens of thousands of servers.

"Those servers basically are what allow us to support all of the Facebook products for our users. Friend requests, tags, user updates will be accessed through this facility," Tom Furlong, Facebook's director of site operations, told Reuters.

"It will mostly serve European users and ideally improve performance for them," he added in a telephone interview.

Swedish construction group NCC said it was part of a joint venture with two U.S. companies, DPR Construction and Fortis Construction, which had won a contract of 800 million crowns ($121 million) for the first of three server buildings in the data center. NCC's share was 400 million.

The data center will be the northernmost of its size on Earth. It is Facebook's first in Europe and will serve more than 800 million site users.

Facebook said in a statement it chose Lulea, despite its remoteness some 1,000 km north of Swedish capital Stockholm, because its cold climate would be good for cooling and that it could provide environmentally friendly hydro-power.

The three server buildings will have an area of 28,000 square meters (300,000 square ft) each. Construction takes place in three phases and begins instantly.

"The first building is to be operational within a year and the entire facility is scheduled for completion by 2014," the company added. "About 300 full-time positions will be required during the first three years."

Freese wins World Series MVP after magical October (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? David Freese gave credit to Albert Pujols for setting him on the right path. He praised manager Tony La Russa for believing in him. He thanked Mark McGwire for the swing tips that paid dividends few could have imagined.

Just maybe, Freese should give a little credit to himself.

The hometown kid who once quit baseball finished off an October to remember with the MVP of the World Series on Friday night. The St. Louis Cardinals wrapped up their 11th championship in dramatic fashion, a 6-2 victory over the Texas Rangers in the first Game 7 since 2002.

Freese batted .348 for the series, with seven RBIs, three doubles and one big homer. He's the fourth Cardinals player to win the MVP award, joining Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson in 1964 and '67, catcher Darrell Porter in 1982 and David Eckstein in their 2006 victory over Detroit.

Freese drove in 21 runs in the postseason, shattering the previous record.

"I've had plenty of days of my life where I thought I wouldn't be even close to being a big leaguer," Freese said. "I'm here because of everybody around me. They've put so much trust in me to accomplish not only baseball but just stuff in life, and to do this is ? I'm just full of joy, finally."

Freese was burned out on baseball after a standout career in suburban St. Louis, so he decided to spurn a scholarship offer from Missouri to simply be a college student. He even rebuffed the Tigers' coaches when they called midway through his first semester to see whether he'd changed his mind.

It wasn't until about a year out of high school that the itch to play finally returned.

Freese gave in and enrolled at St. Louis Community College-Meremec, and his play there caught the attention of the coaching staff at South Alabama. Freese blossomed into the Padres' ninth-round draft pick in 2006, and a trade to the Cardinals eventually brought him home.

"If you wrote a story like that ? a guy gets traded, comes back to his hometown, he's a hero ? if you sent that in the script, it would get thrown back in your face," Commissioner Bud Selig said.

This wasn't a perfect fairy tale, though. That would be too easy.

After he arrived in St. Louis, Freese was arrested for DUI and found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.232 ? nearly three times the legal limit. He needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right ankle last year, and he broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch this season. He was hit by another pitch in August and sustained a concussion.

Each time, he came back better than before.

"I'm so proud of him," McGwire said. "I kept telling him it shows character when you start breaking through those walls, those stumbling blocks. There's always something good at the end of the road, and here it is."

Freese hit a three-run homer in Game 6 of the NLCS against Milwaukee, earning the MVP of that series. His performance against the Rangers made him the sixth player to be the MVP of a league championship series and the World Series in a single season.

Down to the Cardinals' final strike in Game 6, Freese delivered a tying two-run triple in the ninth inning Thursday night. Freese then did one better: a leadoff homer in the 11th that gave St. Louis a dramatic victory and forced the first Game 7 since 2002.

"You're Game 6 performance, David, will turn out to be one for the ages," Selig said in announcing the MVP award. "I'm sure this is a dream come true for a St. Louis native."

Often overlooked in a lineup that features Pujols, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman, Freese left his own impression on baseball's grandest stage out of necessity.

Holliday struggled most of the series before spraining his right wrist during Game 6, taking him off the roster Friday. Pujols was intentionally walked whenever he was a threat.

Freese made the Rangers pay for thinking he was an easy out.

"I said earlier, I don't have a word yet to describe David Freese," Pujols said. "Humble guy, I liked him right away, as soon as we got him. To be able to go through the things he's done in his career, just shows who David Freese is."

In the World Series opener, with the game tied in the sixth inning, Freese delivered a timely double. He alertly moved to third base on a wild pitch, allowing him to score easily for the eventual winning run on Allen Craig's single to right field.

Freese scored the Cardinals' only run in a 2-1 loss in Game 2, and then drove in a pair of runs in a 16-7 victory in Game 3 ? a performance that will be forever overshadowed by Pujols' three homers.

Nobody could overshadow Freese in Game 6.

After committing a critical error when an easy popup bounced out of his glove, Freese more than made up for it with his bat. Down to his final strike, his two-run triple in the ninth forced extra innings, and he joined Bill Mazeroski, Carlton Fisk, Kirby Puckett and Joe Carter as the only players to hit a game-ending homer in Game 6 or later of a Fall Classic.

That's pretty select company.

Much like the company he'll enjoy as MVP of the World Series.

"I've had plenty of days in my life where I'd thought, you know, I wouldn't even be close to being a big leaguer," Freese said. "I'm here because of everyone around me. They put so much trust in me to accomplish, not just baseball, but stuff in life. To do this, I'm just full of joy."

New high-precision eye surgery robot helps doctors stay sharp

A researcher at the Netherland's University of Technology has invented a new type of eye surgery robot designed to steady the ophthalmologist's hands and minimize error -- always a good thing when it comes to having needles and knives near your peepers. Kind of like an Igor to a mad scientist, the robot is considered a "slave" to its "master" doctor, who controls the automaton's arms using two joysticks. The doctor is still in charge of the cuts, but the technology makes sure the MD jabs that needle in at the exact same entry point each time without shaking to minimize ocular marring. Another notable feature is the robot's ability to switch between tools quickly, ensuring that if this whole doctor thing doesn't work out, it'll at least have a job at Hibachi waiting. Jump past the break to check out the full PR.

Smithsonian hosts 'The Black List' portraits in DC (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend, Sean Combs and Serena Williams now have a place in the National Portrait Gallery in a show opening Friday, along with other leading black figures who may be lesser known.

"The Black List" features 50 large-scale photographs from Timothy Greenfield-Sanders in a project that also included a 2008 HBO film.

After a conversation with his friend, the writer Toni Morrison, Greenfield-Sanders began thinking of all the successful black figures he knows ? and how so many were unknown. He and collaborator Elvis Mitchell scribbled down 200 names on napkins over lunch.

"I've done the art world, I've done the music world, I've done the porn world, I've done politics ? I've done all these different worlds, and it's all about accomplishment," Greenfield-Sanders, who is white, told The Associated Press. "I thought it would be interesting: As a white guy, could I do this?"

Morrison, whose portrait is in the exhibit, and others encouraged him to pursue the idea.

His theme came from the historical term, "blacklist," referring to a marginalized group. Greenfield-Sanders wanted to turn the phrase into a roll call of distinction to show the broad range of achievements of African Americans.

The project began in 2006 before most people had heard of the man who would become the first black president. Then-Sen. Barack Obama was on Greenfield-Sanders' wish list, but he said his chances of photographing Obama became less and less as the 2008 campaign drew closer.

Between 2007 and 2009, Mitchell and Greenfield-Sanders arranged 50 interviews ranging from Laurence Fishburne and Tyler Perry to businessman Richard Parsons, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former Gap fashion designer Patrick Robinson. Beyond celebrities, the project includes influential but lesser-known figures, such as playwright Suzan-Lori Parks and urban environmentalist Majora Carter.

"We knew we needed to have some celebrities," Greenfield-Sanders said. "You sell it by having Fishburne and Chris Rock and the other people that draw them in, and then they learn something from these other people."

After filming interviews with each subject, Greenfield-Sanders asked for a portrait sitting. Some gave him all the time he needed. In the case of music mogul Russell Simmons, he had 45 seconds.

Simmons, later a supporter of the project, was "difficult" at first, Greenfield-Sanders said.

"He had his cell phone in his hands throughout the interview," the photographer said. "I'm not going to mince words here."

The Smithsonian exhibit is the first to feature all 50 portraits and will be open through April 2012. A smaller version of "The Black List" has been shown in New York and Los Angeles. Greenfield-Sanders also created "The Latino List," with a similar concept that is on view now at the Brooklyn Museum.

For the Portrait Gallery, the exhibition brings more diverse faces into a museum that once barred living subjects from its collection. Its bylaws had required that anyone in the permanent collection be dead for at least 10 years.

"It tended to be more of a backward look at history, rather than a forward-looking one," said Ann Shumard, curator of photographs. "With the dropping of that prohibition, it has opened us up to addressing contemporary life and the individuals who are making American history as we speak.

"That's a far more diverse and interesting group perhaps than some of the folks ... in the past."

Stocks push higher on Europe reports (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks pushed higher in afternoon trading Wednesday following reports that China will come to the aid of Europe by buying bonds.

Agence France-Presse reported that China has agreed to invest in Europe's financial rescue fund, which will be used to support struggling countries in the European Union. The Dow Jones industrial average jumped more than 100 points after the report came out in the early afternoon.

Stocks had been mixed for much of Wednesday as investors weighed stronger earnings from Boeing and Corning with uncertainty about the outcome of a key meeting among European leaders.

Top European officials are meeting in Brussels to discuss how to contain the region's debt crisis, which has festered for two years. One consideration is increasing the power of a financial rescue fund, which Germany's parliament approved shortly before U.S. stock markets opened. European indexes turned lower ahead of the meeting as doubts emerged that an agreement will be reached.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 124 points, or 1.1 percent, to 11,830 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Boeing Co. led the way. It rose 5 percent after it reported a bigger profit for its latest quarter than analysts expected. It also raised its forecast for 2011 earnings.

The S&P 500 index rose 9, or 0.7 percent, to 1,238. The Nasdaq composite added 6, or 0.2 percent, to 2,644. Amazon.com Inc. slumped 11 percent after reporting a 73 percent drop in income. The retailer cited higher costs for expansion.

Strong economic reports also helped send stocks higher. Businesses ordered more heavy machinery and other long-lasting manufactured goods last month, after excluding aircraft orders, which can be volatile. That indicates businesses are still spending on equipment despite worries about a weak economy and Europe's debt problems.

Also, sales of new homes rose in September after falling for four straight months. Lower home prices enticed buyers.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.19 percent from 2.14 percent late Tuesday as demand diminished for assets perceived to be relatively safe.

Corning Inc. rose 0.5 percent after reporting a 3 percent increase in income last quarter on stronger sales of glass for flat-panel televisions. Its earnings and revenue beat analysts' expectations.

First Solar Inc. rose 7 percent. It reported results a week earlier than expected, and revenue and earnings both improved. That helped the stock recover some of its losses from Tuesday, when it fell 24 percent after the surprise departure of the company's chief executive.

Stocks fell Tuesday for the first time in four days following disappointing reports on consumer confidence and a weak round of corporate earnings. Shoppers are feeling at their least confident since March 2009, and manufacturing giant 3M cut its earnings expectations for the year.

Georgia man convicted in plot to seize courthouse

A jury convicted a Georgia man Tuesday of a federal firearms charge in what authorities said was a plot to take over a Tennessee courthouse and force President Barack Obama out of office.

Darren Wesley Huff, 41, was found guilty of carrying a firearm in interstate commerce with the intent to use it in a civil disorder. He was acquitted of using a firearm in relation to another felony. He faces up to five years in prison.

"The verdict on count one reflects exactly what the law is supposed to do, which is prevent harm before shots get fired, people hurt, or property damaged," Assistant U.S. Attorney Will Mackie told reporters after the verdict.

Scott Green, Huff's attorney, did not comment after the verdict. When he spoke The Associated Press on Monday before the verdict, Green quoted former New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay: "Those who suppress freedom always do so in the name of law and order."

Huff was stopped by Tennessee officers in April 2010 and told them he was bringing guns into the state from Dallas, Ga., to support efforts to arrest Monroe County officials who refused to indict Obama.

Huff was a part of a Georgia militia and the 'birther' movement that disputes Obama's U.S. citizenship.

Officers testified Huff was carrying a loaded Colt .45 in a holster on his hip plus an assault rifle and 200 or 300 rounds of ammunition in a tool box in his truck. They said he also had a document he claimed was a "citizens' arrest warrant" for officials, saying they were domestic enemies and had been charged with treason.

Huff testified that he wanted to help Walter Fitzpatrick, a military retiree living in Madisonville, who was arrested after he tried to put the local grand jury foreman under citizen's arrest. Fitzpatrick, who became hostile to the government two decades ago when he faced a court-martial, is in jail over that incident.

Huff choked back tears as he told the jury Friday that he was humiliated because "my government has called me a potential domestic terrorist."

He denied he threatened to take over the courthouse in Monroe County, which is about halfway between Knoxville and Chattanooga.

"I have never made a statement about taking over the courthouse, the city, the state, nothing," Huff said.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Varlan ordered Huff into custody following the jury's conviction. Huff, wearing a light green shirt and khakis, was handcuffed by officers in the courtroom. A sentencing hearing was scheduled in February.

Astronomers discover complex organic matter in the universe

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

In today's issue of the journal Nature, astronomers report that organic compounds of unexpected complexity exist throughout the Universe. The results suggest that complex organic compounds are not the sole domain of life but can be made naturally by stars.

Prof. Sun Kwok and Dr. Yong Zhang of the University of Hong Kong show that an organic substance commonly found throughout the Universe contains a mixture of aromatic (ring-like) and aliphatic (chain-like) components. The compounds are so complex that their chemical structures resemble those of coal and petroleum. Since coal and oil are remnants of ancient life, this type of organic matter was thought to arise only from living organisms. The team's discovery suggests that complex organic compounds can be synthesized in space even when no life forms are present.

The researchers investigated an unsolved phenomenon: a set of infrared emissions detected in stars, interstellar space, and galaxies. These spectral signatures are known as "Unidentified Infrared Emission features". For over two decades, the most commonly accepted theory on the origin of these signatures has been that they come from simple organic molecules made of carbon and hydrogen atoms, called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. From observations taken by the Infrared Space Observatory and the Spitzer Space Telescope, Kwok and Zhang showed that the astronomical spectra have features that cannot be explained by PAH molecules. Instead, the team proposes that the substances generating these infrared emissions have chemical structures that are much more complex. By analyzing spectra of star dust formed in exploding stars called novae, they show that stars are making these complex organic compounds on extremely short time scales of weeks.

Not only are stars producing this complex organic matter, they are also ejecting it into the general interstellar space, the region between stars. The work supports an earlier idea proposed by Kwok that old stars are molecular factories capable of manufacturing organic compounds. "Our work has shown that stars have no problem making complex organic compounds under near-vacuum conditions," says Kwok. "Theoretically, this is impossible, but observationally we can see it happening."

Most interestingly, this organic star dust is similar in structure to complex organic compounds found in meteorites. Since meteorites are remnants of the early Solar System, the findings raise the possibility that stars enriched the early Solar System with organic compounds. The early Earth was subjected to severe bombardments by comets and asteroids, which potentially could have carried organic star dust. Whether these delivered organic compounds played any role in the development of life on Earth remains an open question.

IMF: Mideast oil importers face economic slowdown (AP)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ? Middle Eastern countries without significant oil resources face a sharp slowdown in economic growth as the effects of the Arab Spring reverberate across the region, the International Monetary Fund said Wednesday.

In a twice-yearly report, the IMF cut its economic growth forecast for the Mideast's oil importing countries ? including Egypt and Tunisia ? to just 1.9 percent this year. That is down from an earlier IMF forecast of 2.3 percent and well below the more than 4 percent growth in 2010.

The Washington-based fund predicts their growth in 2012 will also be weaker than anticipated, coming in at around 3 percent.

"Since the beginning of this year, a deterioration in the international economic outlook and the buildup of domestic social pressures have resulted in an economic slowdown in many of the region's oil-importing countries," said Masood Ahmed, the director of the IMF's Middle East and Central Asia department.

Among the Mideast's oil importers are Tunisia and Egypt, whose longtime leaders were overthrown in revolutions earlier this year. The unrest hurt their economies by causing a drop in tourism and other trade.

Oil exporting countries ? a diverse group that includes wealthy OPEC nations such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar as well as much poorer states like Yemen ? will fare far better thanks to a boom in oil prices and output.

The IMF left its growth target of 4.9 percent for those countries unchanged. That is ahead of its outlook of 4 percent for the world economy as a whole.

For next year, the same group can expect 3.9 percent growth, the IMF forecast.

Libya was left out of the IMF's overall forecasts because of uncertainty caused by months of civil war there. The fighting has clearly taken a toll on the North African country's economy, however.

The IMF estimated that Libya's overall economy is likely to shrink by more than half this year because of the near-shutdown in oil production, which accounted for more than 70 percent of the economy before the war.

The fund praised the decision by Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbors to temporarily boost oil output to make up for supplies that dried up when Libya descended into civil war earlier this year. Ahmed called the increased output "an essential contribution toward global energy market stability."

Many oil-exporting countries, particularly the Gulf monarchies, have boosted spending on public-sector salaries, government subsidies and other perks in response to this year's uprisings.

While they have plenty of cash to cover those handouts for now, the increased costs are pushing some of their budgets ? which now mostly run at a surplus ? closer to the break-even point. That makes them more vulnerable to swings in oil prices at a time when the global economy looks increasingly shaky, the IMF cautioned.

For the region as a whole, the IMF forecast economic growth of 3.9 percent this year and 3.7 percent in 2012.

The IMF report includes oil exporters Algeria, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, the UAE and Yemen, and oil importers Afghanistan, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Pakistan, Syria and Tunisia.

Names of Casey Anthony jurors released in Fla.

A court released the names of the jurors in the Casey Anthony trial for the first time since they acquitted the Florida woman of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee.

The "cooling off" period a Florida judge cited in delaying the release for three months ended Tuesday, and the names of 12 jurors and three alternates were released by the Pinellas County Clerk of Court.

After the trial ended in July, Judge Belvin Perry said he wanted some time to pass before the names were made public because some of the jurors had received death threats.

The jurors were selected from Pinellas County, along Florida's Gulf Coast, because of concerns about pretrial publicity in Orlando, where the two-month trial was held. The jurors were sequestered until the verdict was announced.

Anthony was acquitted of killing Caylee and released from jail a couple of weeks after the trial ended. She is now serving probation on an unrelated check fraud charge at an undisclosed location in Florida.

She was deposed earlier in October for a civil lawsuit that accuses her of ruining another woman's reputation. Anthony told detectives in 2008 that her daughter had been kidnapped by a nanny named Zenaida Gonzalez. The child's body was later found in a wooded area not from the Anthony's home in Orlando.

Detectives have said no such baby sitter existed. But there is an Orlando woman named Zenaida Gonzalez, and she sued Anthony over the name confusion.

New World Notes: Sims 3 Pets: Big Competitive Threat and ...

Last week Electronic Arts released its much-awaited expansion to Sims 3, and it's all about pets you customize, raise, and breed. Here's a fairly hilarious intro by Randall, he of honey badger fame:

Longtime Second Life users will recognize all these features, because they're all available in the very popular virtual pets offered in SL, such as Ozimals bunnies, cat-like Meeroos, and Amaretto horses. (Side note: Since there's an ongoing intellectual property lawsuit over the copyright to virtual breedable animals in SL, will Electronic Arts also get dragged into court too? Hint: No.)

Meeroos versus Sims 3 pets

Anyway, Sims 3 is quite popular with many longtime SLers, so I bet we'll see the virtual pet industry taking a hit (at least temporarily) as many of them rush to raise their sims pets. At the same time, this is also a very good opportunity for them and for Linden Lab, which has been marketing virtual pets in SL as a major feature. So if Sims 3 Pets does well, there's a new market they can market to. Judging by the videos, the SL pets are about on par in graphics quality as the Sims pets, though of course the animations and probably the AI are not as robust. However, SL pets are cheaper (Sims 3 Pets sells for about $32) and probably enable more diversity of activity. And I imagine Linden Lab CEO Rod Humble, who led development on the original Sims 3 game at Electronic Arts, knows all about this Pets spinoff, and is planning to incorporate similar functionality into SL's upcoming virtual animal/NPC functionality.

7.2 quake in Turkey kills 138, collapses buildings (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Cries of panic and horror filled the air as a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey, killing at least 138 people as buildings pancaked and crumpled into rubble. The death toll was expected to rise as rescuers sifted through the rubble and reached outlying villages.

Tens of thousands fled into the streets running, screaming or trying to reach relatives on cell phones as apartment and office buildings cracked or collapsed. As the full extent of the damage became clear, survivors dug in with shovels or even their bare hands, desperately trying to rescue the trapped and the injured.

"There are many people under the rubble," Veysel Keser, the mayor of the district of Celebibag, told NTV. "People are in agony. We can hear their screams for help."

Celebibag is near the hardest-hit area: Ercis, an eastern city of 75,000 close to the Iranian border and on one of Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones. The bustling city of Van, about 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of Ecris, also sustained substantial damage. Highways in the area caved in. The temblor struck at 1:41 p.m. (1041 GMT; 6:41 a.m. EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at least 93 people were killed in Van, 45 others died in Ercis, and about 350 were injured. Several people were still trapped under rubble, he said, without citing any estimates.

Erdogan said rescue work would continue through the night.

Up to 80 buildings collapsed in Ercis, including a dormitory, and 10 buildings collapsed in Van, the Turkish Red Crescent said. The sheer number of collapsed buildings gave rise to fears that the death toll could rise substantially.

U.S. scientists recorded over 100 aftershocks in eastern Turkey within 10 hours of the quake, including one with a magnitude of 6.0. Authorities advised people to stay away from damaged homes, warning they could collapse in the aftershocks.

Residents in Van and Ercis lit campfires, preparing to spend the night outdoors while the Red Crescent began setting up tents in a stadium. Others sought shelter with relatives in nearby villages.

Rescue efforts went deep into the night under generator-powered floodlights. Workers tied steel rods around large concrete slabs in Van, then lifted them with heavy machinery.

Residents sobbed outside the ruins of one flattened eight-story building, hoping that missing relatives would be found. Witnesses said eight people were pulled from the rubble, but frequent aftershocks hampered search efforts. By late evening, some joy emerged as a ninth, a teenage girl, was pulled out alive.

Erdogan urged residents to stay away from damaged buildings and promised assistance to all survivors.

"We won't leave anyone to fend for themselves in the cold of winter," he said.

Around 1,275 rescue teams from 38 provinces were being sent to the region, officials said, and troops were also assisting search-and-rescue efforts.

In Ercis, heavy machinery halted and people were ordered to keep silent as rescuers tried to listen for possible survivors inside a seven-story building housing 28 families, NTV reported.

Some inmates escaped a prison in Van after one of its walls collapsed. TRT television said around 150 inmates had fled, but a prison official said the number was much smaller and many later returned.

Nazmi Gur, a legislator from Van, said his nephew's funeral ceremony was cut short due to the quake and he rushed back to help.

"We managed to rescue a few people but I saw at least five bodies," Gur told The Associated Press. "It was such a powerful temblor. It lasted for such a long time,"

"But now we have no electricity, there is no heating, everyone is outside in the cold," he added.

Authorities had no information yet on remote villages but the provincial governor was touring the region by helicopter and the government sent in tents, field kitchens and blankets.

The earthquake also shook buildings in neighboring Armenia and Iran.

In the Armenian capital of Yerevan, 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Ercis, people rushed into the streets in fear but no damage or injuries were reported. Armenia was the site of a devastating earthquake in 1988 that killed 25,000 people.

Sunday's quake caused panic in several Iranian towns close to the Turkish border and caused cracks in buildings in the city of Chaldoran, Iranian state TV reported.

Leaders around the world conveyed their condolences and offered assistance.

"We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Turkish ally in this difficult time, and are ready to assist," U.S. President Barack Obama said.

Israeli President Shimon Peres telephoned Turkish President Abdullah Gul to offer assistance.

"Israel shares in your sorrow," Peres said in a statement. "Israel is ready to render any assistance that may be required anywhere in Turkey, at any time."

The offer came despite a rift in relations following an 2010 Israeli navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turks dead. Greece, which has a deep dispute with Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus, also offered to send in a special earthquake rescue team.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

More recently, a 6.0-magnitude quake in March 2010 killed 51 people in eastern Turkey, while in 2003, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake killed 177 people in the southeastern city of Bingol.

Istanbul, the country's largest city with more than 12 million people, lies in northwestern Turkey near a major fault line. Experts have warned that overcrowding and shoddy construction in Istanbul could kill tens of thousands if a major earthquake struck.

Rangers lean on Lewis' arm for Game 6

Colby Lewis

By R.B. FALLSTROM

updated 7:58 p.m. ET Oct. 25, 2011

ST. LOUIS - It's already been a productive postseason for Colby Lewis. Next up, a shot at the biggest prize yet.

In Game 6 of the World Series on Wednesday night, Lewis gets the first chance to pitch the Texas Rangers to their first title. No doubt while pitching oh-so-carefully against Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals, he'll be leaning on past October triumphs.

"Well, you definitely think when you're in a kid, you want to be in this position, be on this stage," Lewis said. "I think just being in the situation that we were last year throughout the playoffs gives you more of an edge, more relaxation. That's for sure."

Jaime Garcia is back home where he's most comfortable, and the wild-card Cardinals are back in a familiar win-or-go-home mode, heading into a mound rematch from Game 2.

Three of Garcia's four postseason starts have been at Busch Stadium and the 25-year-old lefty has a 1.93 ERA at home. He outpitched Lewis in the first matchup with seven innings of scoreless, three-hit ball before the bullpen failed in a 2-1 loss.

Garcia was in top form in Game 2 with seven strikeouts and one walk.

"It's been the same for me the last two months basically, and I'm still going to try to do the same thing. Don't change anything, don't try to do too much because this is the World Series. That's kind of how I feel," he said.

Lewis beat the New York Yankees in the clinching Game 6 in the AL championship series last year. He doesn't mind being on the road, getting nine of his 14 wins with a 3.43 ERA, and has been stingy all postseason with a 2.95 ERA.

Facing Lewis in Game 2, the Cardinals were limited to one run on four hits with one extra-base hit in 6 1-3 innings. Manager Ron Washington expects to see the same pitcher again, and is confident there'll be zero stage fright.

"He totally believes in what he's trying to do out there," Washington said. "He never gets away from what he does best. Colby never doubts what he's capable of doing, and I think that's what makes him apart from some guys at this stage."

Garcia had plenty of must-win starts in September, steeling him for the postseason. The Cardinals overtook the faltering Braves on the final day of the season and Garcia was a key contributor, going 3-0 the final month.

He doesn't plan on changing much from his Game 2 start.

"It doesn't matter which team, which lineup, what part of the season it is," Garcia said. "It's just going out there and worrying about the little things that you can control."

The bigger question in La Russa's mind is what to expect from the lineup. The Cardinals were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position in their 4-2 loss in Game 5 loss Monday night at Texas.

"Our confidence is very good that he's going to pitch well," manager Tony La Russa said. "And we're challenging our bats to do more."

La Russa twice declined discussing a potential Game 7 starter, although ace Chris Carpenter volunteered for duty on two days' rest. Carpenter, who allowed two runs in seven innings in Game 5, played catch Tuesday and said he felt fine.

"I think everybody's available for the rest of the year, don't you?" Carpenter said to reporters. "Whatever (La Russa) needs."

Kyle Lohse would be on regular rest but has struggled in the postseason. Edwin Jackson allowed three runs in 5 1-3 innings, throwing 109 pitches in Game 3. Fifth starter Jake Westbrook is a fringe option, having worked just one inning in the postseason.

"There isn't any part of me that doesn't want to have a Game 7," La Russa said. "But every other part of me says let's think about Game 6 first."

Matt Harrison, who lasted just 3 2-3 innings in the Cardinals' 16-7 blowout in Game 3, would be on turn to start Game 7 for the Rangers.

"We have two games to do it, we've got to play .500 ball," Lewis said. "But we definitely want to get it done as soon as possible, that's for sure."

Washington said he's tired of getting asked about pitchers being fatigued. Though the Rangers have two games to do it, there'll be no holding back.

"Every single person that's still playing baseball right now is tired," Washington said. "So that's no excuse."

Abu Dhabi firm backtracks on Guggenheim contract

The Abu Dhabi company building a branch of the Guggenheim museum in the Emirati capital said Sunday it has temporarily dropped plans to award a major construction contract, raising questions about the future of the high profile project.

The state-run Tourism Development and Investment Co. said it recalled the tender for concrete work on the Frank Gehry-designed museum because it is reviewing its strategy for handing out jobs to contractors. It didn't say when it would again seek bids.

The Guggenheim is one of the showcase museums TDIC is building on Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Island, a planned cultural district overlooking the Persian Gulf. The island is also slated to contain a national museum, performing arts center and a branch of the Louvre.

A spokeswoman insisted Sunday that the Guggenheim project is still moving ahead, but didn't provide details.

TDIC has previously said it would open the museum by 2013.

Some preliminary groundwork for the 450,000-square-foot museum has been completed. The construction contract now on hold would have involved major work on the museum's base and other parts of the building.

TDIC has not released the value of that deal.

TDIC is one of several companies set up by Abu Dhabi to diversify the economy and drive development in the emirate, which borders Dubai to the south.

The money-losing company relies heavily on direct cash infusions from the oil-rich Abu Dhabi government, but it also has turned to banks to fund some of its operations.

TDIC executives traveled to Europe and Asia over the summer to meet with potential investors about the possibility of issuing new bonds, but then put off those fundraising plans.

The Guggenheim project has been a flashpoint for controversy.

In March, more than 130 international artists and writers promised to boycott the museum unless authorities do more to protect workers' rights at the site. That followed an earlier report by Human Rights Watch that outlined alleged abuses against migrant workers on the project.

TDIC has said it is committed to protecting workers' rights and has taken on board many of Human Rights Watch's recommendations.

Official: Formula 1 race coming to NJ in 2013 (AP)

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. ? An official with direct knowledge of the plan says Formula One is coming to New Jersey in June 2013 with a race on the Hudson River shoreline just minutes from New York City.

The person says the Grand Prix event will take place in Weehawken and West New York, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity Monday because the race has yet to be announced. A press conference is scheduled in Weehawken on Tuesday.

The U.S. hasn't hosted a Formula One race since 2007 in Indianapolis. A race is scheduled for Austin, Texas, in 2012.
